iPad Software Updates
Finder and older iTunes components on macOS store downloaded iPadOS firmware packages in the iPad Software Updates folder so they do not need to fetch the same restore image again for later updates or restores. These files are typically full IPSW archives containing signed system images, manifests, and restore components, and they can remain on disk long after an update has finished or a device has moved to a newer version. Kudu removes those cached iPad firmware downloads while leaving your photos, backups, device data, accounts, and settings untouched.
Why clean iPad Software Updates?
- Completed iPadOS downloads often leave multi-gigabyte IPSW files behind, and the most obvious symptom is suddenly missing free space on the Mac with no active sync or backup running
- An interrupted or corrupted IPSW download can cause Finder or iTunes to fail verification during update or restore, showing repeated extraction or preparation errors until the stale firmware file is removed
- Cached firmware for an older iPadOS build stays in the folder after Apple stops signing it, so update attempts may download again or fail during restore preparation because that local image is no longer usable
- Multiple IPSW packages accumulate for different iPad models or repeated version upgrades, which clutters storage and makes System Settings storage reports show large unexplained documents or app support usage
- Partially resumed downloads can leave incomplete firmware archives that Finder keeps trying to reuse, leading to long Preparing iPad for restore stages followed by a restart of the download process
- Keeping outdated local firmware copies serves no purpose once the device is already updated, and users typically notice Time Machine backups taking longer because those large archives keep getting scanned or backed up
