Ollama Logs
Local Ollama installs keep several kinds of diagnostic logs around the model server and desktop app lifecycle, including server stdout and stderr logs, upgrade logs, app logs, and rotated log files from previous runs. These files grow as Ollama records model load events, GPU detection, runner startup, pull and serve activity, and update attempts for troubleshooting. Kudu removes known Ollama log files and rotated server logs older than one day while leaving models, manifests, authentication keys, settings, and unrelated files untouched.
Why clean Ollama Logs?
- Verbose server logging during model pulls, runner crashes, or repeated startup retries can leave large log files behind, and the most obvious symptom is Ollama using far more disk space than expected even when your model library has not changed
- Rotated server logs from older sessions accumulate across updates and failed launches, so users often notice dozens of stale log files taking space long after the underlying problem is gone
- Repeated GPU detection failures or fallback attempts can spam the logs with hardware and backend messages, which shows up as rapidly growing files in the Ollama data folder during every launch
- Upgrade and app logs preserve old installer and migration output that is useful only temporarily, and the visible symptom is a cluttered support folder that keeps growing despite normal day to day use
- Long running local API use, chat sessions, and serve activity can produce continuous request and runner output, making backups slower and causing the Ollama folder to look unusually large in Finder or File Explorer
- After a crash loop or misconfigured startup service, Ollama may write the same error repeatedly to server logs, and users typically see disk usage climb while the app keeps failing in the same way
- Cleaning logs is a safe way to reclaim space before troubleshooting again, because it removes only historical diagnostic output and does not delete downloaded models, manifests, keys, accounts, or prompts
