NVIDIA Driver Downloads
NVIDIA’s driver updater stores full driver installer packages under the Downloader cache so the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience can reinstall the exact same release without downloading it again. That folder typically contains compressed driver payloads, extracted setup files, manifest metadata, and component packages for graphics, HD Audio, PhysX, or related modules. Kudu removes older retained download bundles from %ProgramData%/NVIDIA Corporation/Downloader while leaving the installed driver, user settings, accounts, and saved game data alone.
Why clean NVIDIA Driver Downloads?
- Superseded driver packages accumulate after each update and can consume several gigabytes, which shows up as unexpectedly low free space on the system drive even though only one driver version is active
- Interrupted or partially extracted installer downloads leave incomplete payload folders behind, causing repeated install failures or prompts to re-download the same driver package
- Corrupted cached setup archives can make rollback or reinstall attempts fail with extraction errors, missing component messages, or the installer closing before completion
- Stale manifest and package remnants from an older release can confuse the updater, leading to version mismatch notices or a driver package being downloaded again despite already appearing in the cache
- Multiple retained packages for Game Ready and Studio branches make the Downloader directory grow quickly, which users notice when storage analyzers report large hidden ProgramData usage
- Old installer bundles are only useful for reinstalling that exact release, so keeping months of outdated packages provides little benefit while lengthening manual cleanup and backup scans
- After a successful driver install, leftover extracted component files can remain in the cache and waste disk space without improving performance, so cleaning mainly removes storage bloat rather than anything the active driver needs
