NVIDIA Driver Downloads

NVIDIA's driver updater stores full installer payloads under its Downloader directory after fetching a graphics driver, PhysX package, HD Audio component, and related setup manifests. These are compressed download bundles and extracted installer staging files kept so the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience can reinstall that exact driver version without downloading it again. Kudu removes older retained driver download packages from this cache while leaving the installed driver, profiles, account sign-in, and graphics settings untouched.

Why clean NVIDIA Driver Downloads?

  • Old driver packages accumulate because each Game Ready or Studio release is kept as a full installer, and users notice tens of gigabytes used in ProgramData even though only one driver is currently installed
  • Interrupted or partially replaced download bundles can leave a cached installer that fails verification, causing repeated retry loops or generic install failed messages when attempting a reinstall
  • A stale local package for a superseded driver can make the updater prefer an outdated reinstall source, and users may see the app repeatedly offering repair or reinstall for the wrong version
  • Corrupted extracted staging files inside Downloader can cause the NVIDIA installer to stop mid-process with component install errors for PhysX or HD Audio while the existing driver remains unchanged
  • Systems with small SSDs often hit low free space during driver updates because the app keeps both the previous and newly downloaded packages, and users notice downloads aborting or Windows warning about critically low disk space
  • Enterprise or shared PCs that receive frequent GPU updates can accumulate many redundant package revisions, making backup jobs, antivirus scans, and disk indexing take longer because ProgramData contains multiple large installer archives
