LM Studio

LM Studio uses an Electron-based desktop interface plus a local inference server, so it accumulates Chromium HTTP cache files, V8 code cache, GPU shader cache data, and diagnostic server logs during model downloads, UI rendering, and local API requests. Those caches speed up the app shell, embedded web views, and hardware-accelerated interface elements, while the logs record model load failures, backend startup messages, and request traces. Kudu removes only LM Studio’s disposable application cache, GPU cache, and log files, while leaving downloaded models, chat history, and configuration untouched.

Why clean LM Studio?

  • Invalidated V8 code cache after an LM Studio update can make the app feel unusually slow to open or leave the interface hanging on first launch until bytecode is rebuilt
  • Stale GPUCache entries from a graphics driver update can break Chromium shader reuse, causing black panels, flickering controls, or sluggish scrolling in the LM Studio window
  • Corrupted Cache_Data files from interrupted downloads or crashed sessions can leave the built-in model browser showing missing thumbnails, partial pages, or assets that never finish loading
  • Verbose server logs from repeated model load attempts, local API testing, and backend crashes can grow quickly and waste disk space, especially when troubleshooting multiple quantized models
  • Old local inference server logs can preserve errors from previous runtimes and make current startup problems harder to diagnose because the newest failure is buried in stale output
  • A bloated browser cache can keep outdated frontend resources around after an app update, which may show up as odd layout glitches, buttons that do nothing, or pages that render inconsistently
  • Clearing these temporary files resets LM Studio’s disposable runtime state without touching models or chats, which is useful when the app launches but the embedded UI behaves erratically
