AMD Installer Files
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and AMD chipset packages unpack their installer payloads to the AMD folder at the root of the system drive before setup runs. That folder typically holds extracted driver CAB and INF files, MSI packages, InstallManager logs, temporary setup manifests, and prerequisite bundles that are no longer needed after the driver finishes installing because the active driver store and installed software live elsewhere. Kudu removes older extracted installer files from this AMD folder while leaving recent extractions in place and without touching the installed graphics driver, chipset driver, user settings, accounts, or saved profiles.
Why clean AMD Installer Files?
- Repeated Adrenalin and chipset updates leave behind full extracted installer trees, so the AMD folder quietly grows by multiple gigabytes and users notice the C: drive filling up even though only one driver version is actually installed
- Old setup logs, manifests, and duplicate package folders make it harder to tell which installer run was current, so people troubleshooting a failed update often open the AMD folder and find several nearly identical versioned directories
- Extracted installer payloads are not used for normal gaming or desktop operation after setup completes, so keeping months of old CAB, INF, and MSI files wastes SSD space without improving driver performance
- When free space gets low because old AMD extractions accumulate, Windows may start warning about low disk space and large game updates, restore points, or hibernation writes can fail unexpectedly
- Interrupted or retried driver installs can leave partial extraction folders beside successful ones, which makes the AMD directory look like an active install location even though the working driver was already copied into the Windows driver store
- Users who run AMD cleanup or reinstall drivers often assume deleting the AMD folder will remove the live driver, but the observable result after cleaning is simply recovered disk space because the installed display and chipset components remain registered elsewhere
