What Causes This?

Windows Settings can show suggested content, tips, and recommendations based on Microsoft’s built-in help features, promotional prompts, and personalization settings. These suggestions often appear when Windows uses diagnostic data, account-related recommendations, or “finish setting up” prompts to surface extra content inside the Settings app. In some cases, the behavior is also tied to broader notification and privacy options rather than one single switch.

Common Symptoms

  • You see tips, recommendations, or suggested actions at the top of the Settings app
  • Windows shows prompts to finish setting up your device or try Microsoft services
  • Settings pages display extra recommendations you did not ask for
  • Privacy-related suggestions keep reappearing after updates
  • You want a cleaner Settings experience with fewer prompts and less data-driven content

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn off Windows tips and suggestions in Notifications

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to System > Notifications.
    3. Scroll down and expand Additional settings.
    4. Turn off these options if they appear:
      • Show me the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show me what’s new and suggested
      • Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device
      • Get tips and suggestions when using Windows
  2. Disable recommendations in the Settings app

    1. In Settings, go to Privacy & security.
    2. Select General.
    3. Turn off options related to personalized content, such as:
      • Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID
      • Show me suggested content in the Settings app (if available on your version of Windows)
    4. If you do not see the exact wording, disable any similar suggestion or personalization options shown on that page.
  3. Reduce diagnostic-data-based suggestions

    1. In Settings, go to Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
    2. Set Send optional diagnostic data to Off.
    3. Turn off Tailored experiences.
    4. This helps stop Windows from using diagnostic data to show more relevant tips and recommendations.
  4. Turn off device setup prompts

    1. In Settings, open System > Notifications again.
    2. Check Additional settings one more time and make sure setup-related suggestions are disabled.
    3. Then go to Accounts and review any banner or prompt asking you to complete setup, back up files, or try Microsoft services.
    4. Dismiss or skip those prompts where possible.
  5. Sign out and back in, or restart your PC

    1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and choose Sign out, then sign back in.
    2. If the suggestions still appear, restart the PC from Start > Power > Restart.
    3. Reopen Settings and check whether the suggested content is gone.
  6. Check after a Windows update

    1. Some updates re-enable recommendation features.
    2. After major updates, revisit:
      • System > Notifications > Additional settings
      • Privacy & security > General
      • Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback
    3. Confirm the switches are still off.
