Microsoft Edge sync is usually enabled when you sign in with a Microsoft account and turn on syncing during setup. Once it’s active, Edge can upload browsing history, saved passwords, addresses, payment info, and other profile data to your Microsoft account so it appears on other devices. This is convenient, but it can also increase exposure if you want sensitive browsing data to stay only on your current PC.
Common Symptoms
- Your browsing history appears on another Windows PC or phone signed into Edge
- Saved passwords or autofill entries show up on devices you didn’t enter them on
- Edge keeps re-enabling data sharing after you sign in again
- You want to keep form data local, but Edge continues syncing profile information
- Sensitive work or personal browsing data is visible across multiple devices
How to Fix It Manually
-
Open Microsoft Edge settings.
- Launch Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
-
Go to your sync settings.
- In the left sidebar, click Profiles.
- Select Sync.
- If prompted, confirm the Microsoft account currently signed in.
-
Turn off sync for specific data types.
- Under Manage what you sync, disable the switches for:
- History
- Passwords
- Autofill or Addresses and more
- Payment info if you also want to stop card details from syncing
- If you want nothing to sync at all, turn off Sync completely at the top of the page.
- Under Manage what you sync, disable the switches for:
-
Clear synced data already stored in your Microsoft account.
- In the Sync settings page, look for an option such as Reset sync.
- Click Reset sync and confirm.
- This stops syncing and removes synced Edge data from Microsoft’s servers, but it does not delete local favorites or passwords already saved on your PC.
-
Check whether Edge is signed in on shared or secondary devices.
- On each device where you use Edge, open Edge > Settings > Profiles.
- Make sure sync is also disabled there, or sign out of the profile entirely.
- If the same Microsoft account stays signed in elsewhere, data may continue syncing from those devices.
-
Remove saved browsing data from the current PC if needed.
- In Edge, press Ctrl+Shift+Delete to open Clear browsing data.
- Choose All time.
- Select items such as Browsing history, Download history, Passwords, and Autofill form data if you want them removed locally too.
- Click Clear now.
-
Double-check your Windows account and browser sign-in state.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Go to Accounts and review whether you’re using a Microsoft account on this PC.
- In Edge, under Settings > Profiles, consider signing out if you do not want any cloud-linked browser syncing at all.
