What Causes This?

Windows includes personalization and diagnostics features that collect typing patterns, handwriting input, and speech data to improve autocorrect, voice typing, speech recognition, and Microsoft services. These settings are often enabled during setup, after major Windows updates, or when you sign in with a Microsoft account. In some cases, optional diagnostic data and cloud-based speech features keep sending information unless you turn them off manually.

Common Symptoms

  • Windows privacy settings show typing, inking, or speech features enabled
  • Voice typing, online speech recognition, or handwriting personalization is turned on by default
  • Microsoft account privacy dashboards show activity or diagnostic data being collected
  • Privacy-conscious users notice Windows sending optional data they did not intend to share
  • Settings changed back after a feature update or new device setup

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Turn off inking and typing personalization

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to Privacy & security.
    3. Click Inking & typing personalization.
    4. Turn Personal inking dictionary or any typing/inking personalization setting Off.
  2. Disable online speech recognition

    1. In Settings, stay in Privacy & security.
    2. Click Speech.
    3. Turn Online speech recognition Off.
    4. This stops Windows from sending voice input to Microsoft for cloud processing in supported features.
  3. Reduce diagnostic data collection

    1. In Settings, go to Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
    2. Set Send optional diagnostic data to Off.
    3. Turn off Improve inking and typing if that option appears.
    4. You can also click Delete diagnostic data to remove data already stored for this device.
  4. Review voice typing and speech features

    1. Press Windows + H to open Voice typing if it is available.
    2. Open its Settings and disable any cloud-based or auto-launch options you do not want.
    3. If you do not use speech features at all, keep Online speech recognition off so voice input is not processed online.
  5. Check Microsoft privacy settings online

    1. Open your browser and sign in to your Microsoft account privacy dashboard.
    2. Review stored activity, diagnostics, and voice-related data if available.
    3. Delete any saved data you no longer want associated with your account.
  6. Restart your PC and verify the settings stayed off

    1. Click Start > Power > Restart.
    2. After rebooting, go back to:
      • Settings > Privacy & security > Speech
      • Settings > Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization
      • Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback
    3. Confirm the switches are still disabled. If they turned back on, check whether a work/school policy or a recent update changed them.
