What Causes This?

Windows has included features like Wi-Fi Sense, suggested open hotspot connections, and automatic hotspot sharing settings that are meant to make wireless access easier. On some systems, these options stay enabled after setup, after a Windows update, or because of default network settings. That can lead to Windows connecting to networks you did not choose or exposing more wireless-sharing options than you want. In most cases, the issue is not malware — it is a privacy and network preference setting that needs to be turned off manually.

Common Symptoms

  • Your PC connects to public or suggested Wi-Fi networks automatically
• You see hotspot-sharing or network-sharing options enabled in Wi-Fi settings
  • Windows reconnects to networks you do not trust or rarely use
  • You want tighter wireless privacy but are unsure which setting controls it
  • Shared or remembered networks keep appearing even after you stop using them

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Open Wi-Fi settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Click Network & Internet.
    • Select Wi-Fi.
  2. Turn off automatic connection to suggested or open hotspots

    • In the Wi-Fi section, click Manage known networks if needed to review saved networks.
    • Go back and look for options such as:
      • Connect to suggested open hotspots
      • Connect to networks shared by my contacts
      • Connect automatically when in range
    • Turn these options Off wherever they appear on your version of Windows.
  3. Disable mobile hotspot sharing if you do not use it

    • In Settings > Network & Internet, click Mobile hotspot.
    • If Share my Internet connection with other devices is turned on, switch it Off.
    • This prevents your PC from broadcasting its connection as a hotspot.
  4. Stop auto-joining specific saved networks

    • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.
    • Click a network you no longer want Windows to join automatically.
    • Select Properties.
    • Turn off Connect automatically when in range.
    • If you do not trust the network at all, click Forget instead.
  5. Check advanced adapter settings

    • Press Windows + R, type ncpa.cpl, and press Enter.
    • Right-click your Wi-Fi adapter and choose Status, then click Wireless Properties if available.
    • On some systems, you can review connection behavior here and confirm the adapter is not set to reconnect in ways you do not want.
  6. Review privacy and sync behavior on shared Microsoft accounts

    • If you use the same Microsoft account on multiple devices, some network preferences may sync.
    • Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup or Sync your settings depending on your Windows version.
    • Check whether network-related preferences are being synced, and disable sync if you want each device managed separately.
  7. Restart Wi-Fi and test

    • Turn Wi-Fi off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
    • Restart your PC and confirm it no longer connects to unwanted hotspots or shared networks automatically.
