What Causes This?

100% memory usage usually means your RAM is being fully used by apps, background processes, or Windows services. This can happen if too many programs start with Windows, a browser has too many tabs open, or an app has a memory leak and keeps consuming more RAM over time. It can also be caused by outdated drivers, malware, or a paging file that is misconfigured.

Common Symptoms

  • PC feels slow even when only a few apps are open
  • Programs freeze, crash, or take a long time to respond
  • Browser tabs reload constantly or become unresponsive
  • Task Manager shows Memory at or near 100%
  • Windows stutters when switching between apps

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check what is using your memory

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Click More details if needed.
    • Open the Processes tab and click the Memory column to sort by highest usage.
    • Look for apps using unusually large amounts of RAM. If you find one you do not need right now, select it and click End task.
  2. Restart your PC

    • Click Start > Power > Restart.
    • A restart clears temporary memory usage and stops stuck background processes.
    • After restarting, open Task Manager again and check whether memory usage is still unusually high.
  3. Disable unnecessary startup apps

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Go to the Startup apps tab.
    • Right-click apps you do not need launching at startup and choose Disable.
    • Focus on chat apps, game launchers, cloud sync tools, and other non-essential software.
  4. Close browser tabs and remove heavy extensions

    • If your browser is using a lot of memory, close unused tabs and windows.
    • In Chrome or Edge, open the browser menu and review Extensions.
    • Disable or remove extensions you do not use, especially coupon tools, download helpers, and tab managers.
    • Then restart the browser and check memory usage again.
  5. Adjust virtual memory settings

    • Press Windows key + S, type advanced system settings, and open View advanced system settings.
    • Under Performance, click Settings.
    • Open the Advanced tab, then under Virtual memory, click Change.
    • Make sure Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is checked.
    • Click OK and restart your PC if you changed the setting.
  6. Scan for malware

    • Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
    • Click Virus & threat protection.
    • Select Quick scan. If memory usage remains high, run a Full scan.
    • Malware often runs hidden background processes that consume RAM.
  7. Update Windows and drivers

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • Install any available updates and restart.
    • Also update graphics and chipset drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer if the issue started recently.
