What Causes This?

100% CPU usage usually means one or more apps, background services, or Windows processes are using all available processor time. Common causes include too many startup programs, stuck Windows Update tasks, malware, outdated drivers, browser tabs/extensions, or system junk causing extra background activity. On older PCs, even normal multitasking can push CPU usage to the limit if Windows is loaded with unnecessary software.

Common Symptoms

  • The PC feels slow even when only a few apps are open
  • Fans run loudly or the laptop gets unusually hot
  • Programs freeze, stutter, or take a long time to open
  • Mouse and keyboard input lag behind
  • Task Manager shows CPU usage stuck near 100%

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check which process is using the CPU

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc
    • Click More details if needed
    • On the Processes tab, click the CPU column to sort by highest usage
    • Look for apps or background processes constantly using a large percentage of CPU
  2. Close or restart the problem app

    • If a normal app is stuck, select it in Task Manager and click End task
    • Reopen the app and see if CPU usage drops
    • If it is a browser, close extra tabs and disable heavy extensions
    • If the process is something you do not recognize, do not end it until you confirm what it is
  3. Disable unnecessary startup programs

    • In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab
    • Review programs marked Enabled
    • Right-click anything non-essential and choose Disable
    • Focus on apps like game launchers, chat tools, update helpers, and vendor utilities you do not need at boot
    • Restart your PC after making changes
  4. Restart Windows and check for updates

    • Click Start > Power > Restart
    • After rebooting, go to Settings > Windows Update
    • Click Check for updates
    • Install available updates, then restart again
    • A stuck update service or bug can keep CPU usage high until Windows is fully updated
  5. Scan for malware

    • Open Windows Security
