What Causes This?

High memory usage in Windows usually happens when too many apps, background processes, or startup programs are using RAM at the same time. It can also be caused by browser tabs, memory-hungry software, outdated drivers, or apps with memory leaks that keep consuming RAM without releasing it properly. On PCs with limited RAM, even normal multitasking can make Windows feel overloaded.

Common Symptoms

  • Windows feels slow or unresponsive, especially when switching between apps
  • Fans run louder than usual while simple tasks are open
  • Programs freeze, crash, or take a long time to load
  • Browser tabs reload often or show “out of memory” errors
  • Task Manager shows memory usage staying unusually high

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check what is using the most memory

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    • Click More details if needed.
    • Open the Processes tab and click the Memory column to sort by highest usage.
    • Look for apps using an unusually large amount of RAM. If you recognize an app you do not need right now, select it and click End task.
  2. Restart your PC

    • A restart clears temporary memory use and stops stuck background processes.
    • Click Start > Power > Restart.
    • After restarting, check whether memory usage drops before reopening all your usual apps.
  3. Disable unnecessary startup apps

    • Open Task Manager again with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    • Go to the Startup apps tab.
    • Look for apps marked High impact that you do not need launching with Windows.
    • Right-click the app and choose Disable.
    • Leave important security software enabled.
  4. Close browser tabs and remove heavy extensions

    • Browsers are one of the most common causes of high RAM use.
    • Close tabs you are not using, especially video, social media, or web apps.
    • In your browser’s extensions or add-ons page, disable anything you do not need.
    • Restart the browser and check memory use again in Task Manager.
  5. Check for background apps and uninstall software you do not use

    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Sort by Size or review recently installed programs.
    • Uninstall software you no longer use, especially utility apps, launchers, or bundled tools that may run in the background.
    • Then go to Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off apps you do not want running automatically.
  6. Update Windows and device drivers

    • Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • Install any pending updates and restart if prompted.
    • For graphics and chipset drivers, use your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause memory handling issues.
  7. Adjust virtual memory if RAM is limited

    • Press Windows key, type advanced system settings, and open View advanced system settings.
    • Under Performance, click Settings.
    • Open the Advanced tab and click Change under Virtual memory.
    • Make sure Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is enabled, then click OK and restart if needed.
