What Causes This?

Runtime Broker is a built-in Windows process that manages permissions and background activity for Microsoft Store apps. It usually uses very little memory, but it can spike when a Store app is misbehaving, too many background apps are running, or Windows notifications and tips are constantly triggering it. Corrupted temporary files, outdated apps, and a cluttered system can also make the problem worse.

Common Symptoms

  • Task Manager shows Runtime Broker using unusually high memory
  • Windows feels slow when opening apps or switching between windows
  • Fans spin up more than usual while the PC is idle
  • Memory usage stays high even after closing visible apps
  • You notice lag, stuttering, or delayed response in the Start menu or Settings

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check Runtime Broker in Task Manager

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Click More details if Task Manager opens in compact view.
    • Under the Processes tab, find Runtime Broker and check how much Memory it is using.
    • If there are multiple Runtime Broker entries, note whether memory drops after closing certain apps.
  2. Restart the Runtime Broker process

    • In Task Manager, right-click Runtime Broker.
    • Click End task.
    • This will not damage Windows. The process usually restarts automatically if needed.
    • Watch memory usage for a minute to see if it returns to normal.
  3. Turn off Windows tips and suggestions

    • Open Settings with Windows + I.
    • Go to System > Notifications.
    • Scroll down and turn off options like:
      • Get tips and suggestions when using Windows
      • Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows
    • These prompts can repeatedly wake Runtime Broker and increase background activity.
  4. Disable unnecessary background apps

    • In Settings, go to Apps > Installed apps.
    • Click the three dots next to apps you do not need running in the background, then open Advanced options if available.
    • Under Background apps permissions, choose Never.
    • Focus especially on Microsoft Store apps you rarely use.
  5. Update or remove problematic Store apps

    • Open the Microsoft Store.
    • Click your profile icon or Library, then install available app updates.
    • If the issue started after installing a specific app, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Restart your PC and check whether Runtime Broker memory usage improves.
  6. Clear temporary files

    • Open Settings > System > Storage.
    • Click Temporary files.
    • Select items you want to remove, such as temporary files and cache, then click Remove files.
    • Extra clutter can keep apps and Windows services working harder than necessary.
  7. Run a system file check

    • Click Start, type cmd, then right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
    • Enter:
      sfc /scannow
    • Let the scan finish, then restart your PC.
    • If Windows system files are damaged, this can help restore normal behavior.
