What Causes This?

Game Pass installs usually go to the wrong drive because Windows, the Xbox app, and the Microsoft Store can each have different storage preferences. If those settings are out of sync, Windows may keep sending new games to your old default drive even after you changed it somewhere else. This also happens when a drive was disconnected, renamed, ran low on space, or still has an existing Xbox games library that Windows prefers.

Common Symptoms

  • Game Pass games keep installing to C: even though you selected another drive
  • The Xbox app shows one install location, but downloads go somewhere else
  • You get low storage warnings on the wrong drive
  • New games install to a previous SSD or HDD after you upgraded storage
  • You cannot change the install drive or the option is grayed out

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check the install drive inside the Xbox app

    1. Open the Xbox app from Start.
    2. Click your profile picture in the top-left or top-right, then open Settings.
    3. Select General.
    4. Under Game install options or Install options, look for the default install folder and drive.
    5. Change it to the drive you actually want to use, then close and reopen the Xbox app.
  2. Set the correct default drive in Windows storage settings

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
    3. Find New apps will save to.
    4. Select your preferred drive from the dropdown list.
    5. Click Apply if Windows shows the option.
  3. Verify the drive is available and has enough space

    1. Open File Explorer with Windows + E.
    2. Click This PC.
    3. Confirm the target drive is connected, shows the correct drive letter, and has enough free space for the game.
    4. If the drive is external, reconnect it and wait for Windows to fully detect it before opening the Xbox app again.
  4. Check the Microsoft Store app settings

    1. Open Microsoft Store from Start.
    2. Click your profile icon, then make sure you are signed into the same Microsoft account used in the Xbox app.
    3. Install updates for the Xbox app, Gaming Services, and Microsoft Store if available.
    4. A mismatch or outdated app can cause install location settings to behave incorrectly.
  5. Repair Gaming Services and the Xbox app

    1. Press Windows + I and go to Apps > Installed apps.
    2. Find Xbox, click the three dots, then choose Advanced options.
    3. Click Repair. If that does not help, click Reset.
    4. Repeat the same process for Gaming Services and Microsoft Store.
    5. Restart your PC and test a small Game Pass install.
  6. Move or reinstall games that are already on the wrong drive

    1. In the Xbox app, find the installed game.
    2. Open the game’s Manage or More options menu.
    3. If available, use Move to send it to the correct drive.
    4. If the move option is missing, uninstall the game and reinstall it after fixing the default drive settings above.
