What Causes This?

The Start Menu usually stops working when Windows system files, cached app data, or user profile settings become corrupted. It can also happen after a failed Windows update, too many temporary files building up, or background processes like Windows Explorer getting stuck. In some cases, broken Microsoft Store components or system clutter interfere with Start Menu apps loading correctly.

Common Symptoms

  • Clicking the Start button does nothing
  • The Start Menu opens and immediately closes
  • Search from the Start Menu does not work
  • The taskbar freezes or becomes unresponsive
  • Pressing the Windows key has no effect

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart Windows Explorer

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • If Task Manager opens in compact view, click More details.
    • In the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer.
    • Right-click it and choose Restart.
    • Test the Start Menu again.
  2. Sign out and sign back in

    • Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and choose Sign out.
    • Log back into your Windows account.
    • Try opening the Start Menu.
    • If it still does not work, continue to the next step.
  3. Run the System File Checker

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Click File > Run new task.
    • Type cmd, check Create this task with administrative privileges, and click OK.
    • In Command Prompt, run:
      sfc /scannow
    • Wait for the scan to finish, then restart your PC.
  4. Repair the Windows image with DISM

    • Open Command Prompt as administrator again using Task Manager.
    • Run these commands one at a time:
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Let each command finish completely.
    • Restart your PC and check whether the Start Menu works.
  5. Re-register the Start Menu and built-in apps

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Click File > Run new task.
    • Type powershell, check Create this task with administrative privileges, then click OK.
    • Paste this command and press Enter:
      Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
    • Wait for the process to finish. Some red text may appear; that is normal if some apps are already registered.
    • Restart your PC.
  6. Clear temporary files

    • Press Windows + R, type cleanmgr, and press Enter.
    • Select your C: drive and click OK.
    • Check items like Temporary files, Thumbnails, and Temporary Internet Files.
    • Click OK, then Delete Files.
    • You can also go to Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files and remove unnecessary files there.
    • Built-up junk files and cache can slow or break Start Menu behavior.
  7. Create a new user account to test profile corruption

    • Open Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
    • Click Add account under Other users.
    • Create a new local account, then sign into it.
    • If the Start Menu works there, your original Windows profile is likely corrupted.
