What Causes This?

Windows temp storage grows quickly when apps, installers, browsers, and Windows itself keep creating temporary files but do not clean them up properly. Large updates, failed installs, crash logs, app caches, and leftover files in folders like %temp% and C:\Windows\Temp can pile up fast. This is especially common on PCs with limited storage, heavy browser use, or software that constantly writes cache data.

Common Symptoms

  • Your C: drive keeps losing free space every day
  • Windows warns that storage is almost full
  • Temporary files in Storage settings show unusually high usage
  • Updates, installs, or app launches start failing due to low disk space
  • The PC feels slower when saving files or opening programs

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check what Windows says is using the space

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings
    • Go to System > Storage
    • Wait for Windows to calculate usage
    • Click Temporary files and review the categories taking up space
  2. Delete temporary files from Storage settings

    • In Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files
    • Check items you want to remove, such as:
      • Temporary files
      • Delivery Optimization Files
      • DirectX Shader Cache
      • Thumbnails
      • Windows Update Cleanup
    • Be careful with Downloads if it appears, since that may contain personal files
    • Click Remove files
  3. Clear the user temp folder

    • Press Windows + R, type %temp%, and press Enter
    • In the folder that opens, press Ctrl + A to select everything
    • Press Shift + Delete to permanently remove the files
    • If Windows says some files are in use, click Skip
  4. Clear the system temp folder

    • Press Windows + R, type temp, and press Enter
    • Delete what you can from that folder
    • Then open File Explorer and go to C:\Windows\Temp
    • If prompted, click Continue for administrator access
    • Delete the files you can and skip anything currently in use
  5. Clean up browser cache

    • In Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, open the browser menu and go to History > Clear browsing data
    • Select Cached images and files
    • Choose a time range such as All time if you want the biggest cleanup
    • Confirm the deletion
    • Browsers often store several GB of cached data
  6. Run Disk Cleanup for leftover system files

    • Press Windows, type Disk Cleanup, and open it
    • Select your system drive, usually C:
    • Click Clean up system files
    • Re-scan the drive, then check items like:
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • Temporary files
      • Windows Update Cleanup
      • System created Windows Error Reporting
    • Click OK, then Delete Files
  7. Turn on Storage Sense to prevent temp buildup

    • Open Settings > System > Storage
    • Turn on Storage Sense
    • Click Storage Sense to configure it
    • Set Windows to automatically delete temporary files and clean the Recycle Bin on a schedule
