Cookies are small files your web browser saves to remember logins, site preferences, and browsing activity. Over time, they build up across browsers like Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, especially if you rarely clear browsing data. While cookies are usually harmless, too many old or corrupted cookies can cause website sign-in problems, loading errors, and minor storage clutter on your Windows PC.
Common Symptoms
- Websites keep logging you out or failing to remember your settings
- A site loads incorrectly or shows outdated content
- You see repeated sign-in errors on pages that normally work
- Your browser feels cluttered with old browsing data
- You want to clear saved website tracking data from your PC
How to Fix It Manually
-
Close any websites you are actively using
- Save your work in web apps first.
- Clearing cookies may sign you out of websites, including email, shopping sites, and social media.
-
Clear cookies in Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete to open Clear browsing data.
- Set Time range to All time if you want to remove everything.
- Check Cookies and other site data.
- Optionally leave other boxes unchecked if you only want to remove cookies.
- Click Clear now.
-
Clear cookies in Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
- In the Basic tab, set Time range to All time.
- Check Cookies and other site data.
- Click Delete data.
-
Clear cookies in Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
- Set Time range to clear to Everything.
- Check Cookies.
- Click Clear or OK, depending on your version.
-
Clear cookies for one specific site if the problem is limited
- In your browser, open the problem website.
- Click the padlock icon next to the address bar.
- Look for Cookies, Site settings, or Clear data.
- Remove stored data for that site only, then reload the page.
- This is useful if you do not want to sign out of every website.
-
Restart your browser
- Fully close the browser window.
- Reopen it and test the website again.
- If the issue continues, restart Windows by clicking Start > Power > Restart.
-
Check whether the issue is browser-specific
- Try opening the same website in another browser installed on your PC.
- If the site works there, the problem is likely tied to cookies or cached data in the original browser.
-
Repeat for each browser you use
- Many Windows users have more than one browser installed.
- Cookies are stored separately in each browser, so clearing Edge will not remove Chrome or Firefox cookies.
