What Causes This?

OneDrive usually gets stuck or paused because something is blocking the sync process: a broken sign-in session, a network problem, a file name or path OneDrive does not accept, or the app itself hanging in the background. It can also happen after Windows updates, low disk space, or when OneDrive is paused on battery saver or metered connections. In some cases, corrupted cache data or a damaged OneDrive installation stops syncing completely.

Common Symptoms

  • OneDrive shows Paused, Sync pending, or stays on Processing changes
  • Files do not upload or download between your PC and OneDrive
  • The OneDrive cloud icon has a red X, gray X, or spinning sync arrows that never finish
  • You see errors about account problems, file names, or not enough storage
  • Recently changed files are missing on other devices

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check whether OneDrive is paused

    1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area near the clock.
    2. If you do not see it, click the up arrow to show hidden icons.
    3. If OneDrive says Paused, click Resume syncing.
    4. Also check for messages like Sign in, Fix now, or View sync problems.
  2. Make sure your internet connection is not blocking sync

    1. Open Settings with Windows + I.
    2. Go to Network & internet and confirm you are connected.
    3. If you are on Wi-Fi, try opening a few websites to confirm the connection is stable.
    4. In Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > your network, check whether the connection is set as Metered. If it is, OneDrive may pause large sync jobs.
    5. Turn off Battery saver in Settings > System > Power & battery if OneDrive is pausing on battery.
  3. Restart OneDrive

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    2. Find Microsoft OneDrive under Processes.
    3. Right-click it and choose End task.
    4. Press Windows + R, type: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe
    5. Press Enter to start OneDrive again.
    6. Wait a minute and check whether syncing resumes.
  4. Look for file or folder problems

    1. Click the OneDrive icon and open any listed sync errors.
    2. Check for files with invalid characters such as * : < > ? / \ | or very long file paths.
    3. Rename the file or move it to a shorter path, such as directly inside your Documents folder.
    4. Also make sure you are not trying to sync a file that is open in another app.
  5. Check available storage

    1. Open File Explorer with Windows + E.
    2. Check free space on your C: drive.
    3. Then sign in to onedrive.com and confirm your OneDrive account is not full.
    4. If either storage location is low, delete unused files or move large files elsewhere.
  6. Reset OneDrive

    1. Press Windows + R.
    2. Paste this command and press Enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset
    3. Wait 1-2 minutes. The OneDrive icon may disappear and return.
    4. If it does not restart automatically, press Windows + R again and run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe
    5. Sign in again if prompted.
  7. Unlink and reconnect your account if sync is still stuck

    1. Click the OneDrive icon > Help & Settings > Settings.
    2. Under the Account tab, select Unlink this PC.
    3. Restart your computer.
    4. Open OneDrive from the Start menu and sign back in.
    5. Choose your OneDrive folder and let it rebuild the sync connection.
