What Causes This?

Many free programs include bundled extras during setup, such as trial antivirus tools, browser extensions, shopping assistants, system cleaners, or ad-supported apps. These offers are often pre-checked in the installer, hidden behind “Express” or “Recommended” setup options, or described in vague language that makes them easy to miss. Once installed, bundleware may add startup entries, scheduled tasks, browser changes, and leftover files that stay behind even after uninstalling the main app.

Common Symptoms

  • New apps appear in Start menu or Settings that you did not intentionally install
  • Your browser homepage, search engine, or new tab page changes unexpectedly
  • More pop-ups, notifications, or ads appear on the desktop or in the browser
  • Windows starts slower or feels more cluttered after installing freeware
  • Security software, trialware, or “PC cleaner” tools keep asking for payment

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Uninstall suspicious apps from Settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
    • Sort by Install date to find anything added around the same time as the freeware.
    • Look for unknown toolbars, trial software, browser helpers, “optimizer” apps, or duplicate security tools.
    • Click the three dots next to an app and choose Uninstall.
  2. Check Control Panel for older uninstallers

    • Press Windows + R, type appwiz.cpl, and press Enter.
    • In Programs and Features, review the installed list for anything suspicious.
    • Uninstall bundleware that may not appear clearly in the newer Settings list.
    • If prompted to keep settings or user data, choose No unless you know you need them.
  3. Disable leftover startup items

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Click the Startup tab, or Startup apps in newer versions.
    • Disable entries tied to the unwanted software, especially anything with a vague publisher name or no publisher at all.
    • Restart your PC after disabling them.
  4. Remove browser add-ons and reset unwanted changes

    • In Chrome: open the menu > Extensions > Manage Extensions and remove anything you did not add.
    • In Edge: open the menu > Extensions > Manage extensions and remove suspicious add-ons.
    • Also check browser Settings for your default search engine, homepage, and new tab behavior.
    • If the browser still acts strangely, use its built-in Reset settings option.
  5. Delete scheduled tasks created by bundleware

    • Press Windows + S, search for Task Scheduler, and open it.
    • Click Task Scheduler Library and review tasks with odd names or references to the unwanted app.
    • If a task clearly belongs to bundleware, right-click it and choose Delete.
    • Be careful not to remove tasks from Microsoft, your hardware maker, or software you trust.
  6. Clean leftover folders

    • Press Windows + R, type %ProgramFiles%, and press Enter. Check for folders from the unwanted app.
    • Do the same for %ProgramFiles(x86)%, %AppData%, and %LocalAppData%.
    • Delete leftover folders only if the related app has already been uninstalled.
    • Empty the Recycle Bin when finished.
  7. Run a Windows Security scan

    • Open Start, search for Windows Security, and open it.
    • Go to Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
    • Run a Full scan to catch adware or potentially unwanted software that came with the installer.
