Windows and Microsoft Office can connect to social services like Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and other online accounts through apps, add-ins, contact sync features, and account permissions. These connections are often created when you sign in to Microsoft apps, allow an Office add-in, or use a Mail, People, or browser feature that imports profile or contact data. Even if you stop using the integration, the connection or stored permissions may remain active until you remove them manually.
Common Symptoms
- Office apps show social profile info, contact suggestions, or connected account prompts
- Windows apps like Mail, Calendar, or People display imported contacts or linked accounts
- You see Facebook or Twitter/X listed in account permissions, add-ins, or connected services
- Contacts, profile photos, or activity details appear where you did not expect them
- You want to reduce data sharing but are not sure where the integration is enabled
How to Fix It Manually
-
Remove connected accounts from Windows apps
- Open Settings with Win + I.
- Go to Accounts.
- Check Email & accounts and Access work or school for any connected accounts you no longer want.
- If you see a social-related account or an account tied to apps that sync contacts, select it and choose Remove or Disconnect.
-
Check Mail and Calendar app account connections
- Open the Mail app.
- Click the gear icon in the lower-left corner, then choose Manage Accounts.
- Review the list for Microsoft, Google, or other accounts that may be syncing contacts and profile data.
- Select an account you do not want linked and click Delete account from this device.
-
Remove Office add-ins that connect to social services
- Open Word or Outlook.
- Click File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage, choose COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Uncheck or remove any add-in related to social feeds, contact syncing, or third-party profile services.
- Repeat for Office Add-ins if available in your version of Office.
-
Disconnect Microsoft account permissions
- Open your browser and sign in at account.microsoft.com.
- Go to Privacy or Apps and services and review connected apps.
- Remove permissions for any app or service that links your Microsoft account with Facebook, Twitter/X, or contact-sharing tools.
- Also check account.live.com/consent/Manage for app permissions and revoke anything you no longer trust.
-
Review Outlook contact and people settings
- In Outlook, go to File > Options > People.
- Disable features that show online status, social information, or extra profile data if they are enabled.
- In older Office versions, look for the People Pane or Social Connector settings and turn them off.
-
Clear browser sign-ins and extension-based integrations
- In Microsoft Edge, click the three dots > Extensions and remove any extension that connects Facebook or Twitter/X with Microsoft or Office services.
- Then go to Settings > Profiles > Sync and review what is being shared.
- If needed, sign out of sites you no longer want linked and clear saved permissions in the browser.
-
Restart and verify
- Restart your PC.
- Open Outlook, Word, Mail, or other Microsoft apps and confirm that social profile suggestions, synced contacts, or connected account prompts are gone.
- If the integration returns, check whether it is being re-added by a browser extension, mobile sync app, or Microsoft account permission.
