What Causes This?

Office apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint often start slowly when too many add-ins, background services, or startup tasks are loading at the same time. A damaged Office installation, outdated app files, or cloud integrations like OneDrive can also delay launch. In some cases, Windows itself is fine, but Office is waiting on unnecessary components before the app window appears.

Common Symptoms

  • Word, Excel, or PowerPoint takes 10+ seconds to open
  • The app shows a blank splash screen for a long time
  • Office opens faster in Safe Mode than normal
  • The delay is worse right after signing into Windows
  • Only some Office apps are slow, usually ones with more add-ins

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Test whether add-ins are causing the delay

    • Press Windows + R to open Run.
    • Type one of these commands and press Enter:
      • winword /safe for Word
      • excel /safe for Excel
      • powerpnt /safe for PowerPoint
    • If the app opens much faster in Safe Mode, an add-in is likely the problem.
  2. Disable Office add-ins

    • Open the Office app normally.
    • Click File > Options > Add-ins.
    • At the bottom, next to Manage, choose COM Add-ins and click Go.
    • Uncheck all add-ins, then click OK.
    • Close and reopen the app.
    • If it launches quickly, re-enable add-ins one at a time until you find the slow one.
  3. Turn off unnecessary startup apps in Windows

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Click Startup apps in the left sidebar (or the Startup tab on older Windows versions).
    • Look for apps that don’t need to start with Windows, especially cloud sync tools, printer utilities, and third-party helpers.
    • Right-click each unnecessary item and choose Disable.
    • Restart your PC and test Office again.
  4. Repair Microsoft Office

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on Windows 10).
    • Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the list.
    • Click the three dots > Modify (or select it and click Modify).
    • Choose Quick Repair first and let it finish.
    • If Office is still slow, repeat the process and run Online Repair.
  5. Check OneDrive and sign-in related delays

    • If your files are stored in OneDrive, make sure OneDrive is signed in and syncing properly.
    • Open OneDrive from the taskbar and check for sync errors.
    • In the Office app, try opening a blank document instead of a recent cloud file to see if the delay is tied to online file loading.
    • If needed, sign out and back into Office from File > Account.
  6. Update Office

    • Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
    • Go to File > Account.
    • Under Office Updates, click Update Options > Update Now.
    • Install any available updates, then restart the app.
  7. Check for system resource issues

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • On the Processes tab, watch CPU, Memory, and Disk usage while launching Office.
    • If another app is heavily using system resources, close it and test again.
    • Antivirus scans, sync tools, and browser tabs can all slow Office startup.
