What Causes This?

Windows includes a privacy setting called Tailored experiences that uses your diagnostic data to personalize tips, ads, recommendations, and Microsoft product suggestions. This is usually enabled by default or left on after setup, especially if you accepted recommended privacy settings during installation or updates. If it’s on, Windows can use the diagnostic data it collects to show more targeted content across the system.

Common Symptoms

  • You see personalized tips or suggestions in Settings, Start, or other Windows screens
  • Windows recommends Microsoft apps, services, or features based on your activity
  • You want to reduce tracking but still notice data-driven recommendations
  • Privacy reviews show that diagnostic-based personalization is still enabled

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Open Windows Settings

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy settings

    • On Windows 11, click Privacy & security in the left sidebar.
    • On Windows 10, click Privacy.
  3. Open the Diagnostics & feedback page

    • In Windows 11, scroll down and click Diagnostics & feedback under Windows permissions.
    • In Windows 10, click Diagnostics & feedback in the left pane.
  4. Turn off Tailored experiences

    • Find Tailored experiences.
    • Switch off Let Microsoft use your diagnostic data, excluding information about websites you browse, to make your experiences more relevant with tailored tips, ads, and recommendations.
    • Once this is off, Windows should stop using diagnostic data for personalized suggestions.
  5. Optionally reduce diagnostic data collection

    • On the same Diagnostics & feedback page, look for Diagnostic data.
    • If available, select Required diagnostic data instead of Optional diagnostic data.
    • This limits how much data Windows sends and further reduces personalization.
  6. Clear existing diagnostic data if you want a cleaner reset

    • Stay on the Diagnostics & feedback page.
    • Scroll to Delete diagnostic data.
    • Click Delete, then confirm if prompted.
    • This removes diagnostic data associated with your device from Microsoft’s systems.
  7. Check related suggestion settings

    • Go back to the main Settings screen.
    • In Windows 11, open System > Notifications > Additional settings.
    • In Windows 10, go to System > Notifications & actions.
    • Turn off options like:
      • Offer suggestions on how I can set up my device
      • Get tips and suggestions when using Windows
      • Any similar recommendation or welcome experience settings
    • This helps stop other built-in prompts that aren’t controlled by Tailored experiences alone.
  8. Restart your PC

    • Click Start > Power > Restart.
    • After restarting, Windows should apply the updated privacy settings fully.
