What Causes This?

A slow Windows PC is usually caused by a mix of too many startup apps, low free disk space, background processes, outdated software, or temporary junk files building up over time. On older systems, limited RAM or a nearly full drive can make everything feel delayed. Malware, heavy browser use, and Windows updates running in the background can also drag performance down.

Common Symptoms

  • Programs take a long time to open or switch between
  • Windows takes much longer than usual to boot
  • The mouse or keyboard feels delayed or stutters
  • Fans run loudly even when you are doing basic tasks
  • File Explorer, browser tabs, or Settings freeze or lag

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart your PC first

    • A restart clears stuck background processes and temporary memory usage.
    • Click Start > Power > Restart.
    • If you normally use Sleep, do a full restart instead.
  2. Disable unnecessary startup apps

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Click Startup apps in the left sidebar. On Windows 10, click the Startup tab.
    • Look for apps with High impact that you do not need at boot, such as chat apps, launchers, or update helpers.
    • Right-click each one and choose Disable.
    • Restart your PC and check if startup improves.
  3. Free up disk space

    • Open Settings > System > Storage.
    • Check how much free space is left on your main drive, usually C:.
    • Click Temporary files, review the list, and remove items you do not need.
    • Turn on Storage Sense if it is off so Windows can clean temporary files automatically.
    • If your drive is nearly full, uninstall apps you no longer use from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Check what is using CPU, memory, or disk

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • In the Processes tab, click CPU, Memory, and Disk to sort by usage.
    • Look for apps using unusually high resources for long periods.
    • Close apps you do not need. If one app keeps spiking usage, update it or reinstall it.
    • Be careful not to end Windows system processes unless you know what they are.
  5. Run a malware scan

    • Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
    • Go to Virus & threat protection.
    • Click Quick scan. If your PC still feels suspiciously slow, run a Full scan.
    • Malware often causes constant disk usage, pop-ups, or unexplained slowdowns.
  6. Update Windows and your drivers

    • Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • Install pending updates and restart if prompted.
    • For graphics and chipset drivers, visit your PC maker’s support page or use Device Manager to check for driver updates.
    • Outdated drivers can cause lag, freezes, and poor overall performance.
  7. Adjust visual effects for better speed

    • Press Windows key + S, type advanced system settings, and open View advanced system settings.
    • Under Performance, click Settings.
    • Choose Adjust for best performance, or manually disable animations and visual effects you do not need.
    • Click Apply, then OK.
