A Windows update can temporarily slow down your PC because the system is still finishing background tasks after the install. This can include indexing files, rebuilding caches, installing drivers, and cleaning up old update components.
In some cases, the update also changes startup apps, installs a problematic driver, or leaves behind large temporary files that take up disk space. If your PC was already low on storage or memory, the slowdown is usually more noticeable right after the update.
Common Symptoms
- Boot times are much longer than usual
- Apps take longer to open or freeze briefly
- High CPU, disk, or memory usage even when you are not doing much
- File Explorer, Start menu, or Settings feels laggy
- The PC runs hot or fans stay loud after updating
How to Fix It Manually
-
Restart your PC once more
- After a major update, Windows may still be finishing setup tasks in the background.
- Click Start > Power > Restart instead of Shut down.
- After rebooting, wait 10-15 minutes and see if performance improves.
-
Check Task Manager for heavy background usage
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- On the Processes tab, click the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns to sort by usage.
- Look for processes using unusually high resources, such as Windows Modules Installer Worker, Search Indexer, or an app that starts with Windows.
- If a non-essential app is stuck using resources, select it and click End task.
-
Disable unnecessary startup apps
- In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab.
- Review apps marked Enabled, especially ones with High impact.
- Right-click apps you do not need at startup and choose Disable.
- Leave security software and important system tools enabled.
-
Free up update leftovers and temporary files
- Open Settings with Win+I.
- Go to System > Storage > Temporary files.
- Let Windows scan, then check items such as Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary files, and Delivery Optimization Files.
- Read the list carefully and avoid deleting Downloads unless you are sure.
- Click Remove files.
-
Run Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup
- In Settings > System > Storage, turn on Storage Sense if it is off.
- For a deeper cleanup, press Win+S, type Disk Cleanup, and open it.
- Select your system drive, usually C:, then click Clean up system files.
- Check Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary Internet Files, and other safe categories, then click OK.
-
Check for driver and update issues
- Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
- Install any pending updates, including optional driver updates if they are relevant to your hardware.
- If the slowdown started immediately after a specific update, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and remove the most recent problematic update if necessary.
-
Scan and repair system files
- Press Win+S, type cmd, then choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
sfc /scannow
- After it finishes, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Restart your PC when both scans are complete.
