Junk files build up on a Mac over time as apps, browsers, and macOS create temporary files, caches, logs, old installers, and leftover support files. Even after you uninstall apps or empty the Trash, extra data can remain in hidden Library folders and continue taking up space. Downloads, duplicate files, and large attachments also add to the clutter and can slow down storage-related tasks.
Common Symptoms
- Your Mac shows low storage warnings or runs out of free space quickly
- Apps take longer to open or feel less responsive than usual
- You notice large “System Data” or “Other” storage categories
- The Downloads folder, Trash, or browser data keeps growing
- You are not sure what files are safe to delete
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check what is using storage
- Click the Apple menu > System Settings.
- Go to General > Storage.
- Wait for macOS to calculate usage, then review categories like Applications, Documents, System Data, and Mail.
- Start with the largest categories so you can free up space faster.
-
Empty the Trash
- Right-click the Trash icon in the Dock.
- Select Empty Trash.
- Confirm the action.
- If files are locked or in use, close related apps and try again.
-
Delete large files from Downloads and Documents
- Open Finder.
- Click Downloads and look for old installers such as
.dmg,.pkg, or large ZIP files. - Delete anything you no longer need.
- In Finder, press Command+F, choose This Mac, then filter by File Size to find large files.
- Move unwanted files to Trash, then empty it again.
-
Clear browser cache and website data
- In Safari, click Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
- Remove data for sites you do not need, or click Remove All.
- In Chrome, open Chrome and press Command+Shift+Delete.
- Choose Cached images and files, select a time range, and clear the data.
- Repeat for other browsers you use.
-
Remove apps you no longer use
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Drag unused apps to the Trash.
- Some apps leave behind support files in Finder > Go > Go to Folder.
- Check these folders one at a time for leftovers related to removed apps:
~/Library/Application Support~/Library/Caches~/Library/Logs
- Delete only folders clearly tied to apps you already removed.
-
Use built-in storage recommendations
- Go back to System Settings > General > Storage.
- Review recommendations such as Optimize Storage, Empty Trash Automatically, and Reduce Clutter.
- Enable the options that fit how you use your Mac.
- Reboot your Mac after cleanup to help storage recalculate correctly.
