High memory pressure on a Mac usually means your system is running low on available RAM and is working harder to keep apps responsive. This often happens when too many apps or browser tabs are open, background processes are using excessive memory, or startup items keep loading even when you do not need them. In some cases, low free disk space also makes the problem worse because macOS relies on storage for swap memory when RAM fills up.
Common Symptoms
- Your Mac feels slow when switching between apps
- Apps freeze, crash, or show the spinning beach ball often
- Fans run loudly even during light use
- Browser tabs reload unexpectedly
- You see yellow or red memory pressure in Activity Monitor
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check memory usage in Activity Monitor
- Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
- Click the Memory tab
- Look at the Memory Pressure graph at the bottom
- Sort by Memory to see which apps or processes are using the most RAM
-
Quit apps using too much memory
- In Activity Monitor, select a high-memory app you are not actively using
- Click the X button in the toolbar, then choose Quit
- If it does not close, choose Force Quit
- You can also press Option + Command + Esc to open the Force Quit Applications window and close frozen apps
-
Reduce browser tab and extension usage
- Close tabs you do not need, especially video, social media, or web app tabs
- Remove or disable browser extensions you rarely use
- In Safari, Chrome, or Firefox, restart the browser after closing heavy tabs to release memory fully
-
Disable unnecessary login items
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items
- Review apps under Open at Login
- Remove anything you do not need starting automatically
- Also check background items and disable nonessential ones
-
Free up disk space
- Open Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Storage Settings
- Delete large files, old downloads, and apps you no longer use
- Empty the Trash
- Try to keep at least 10–20 GB free so macOS has room for swap files and temporary data
-
Restart your Mac
- Click the Apple menu > Restart
- A restart clears temporary memory usage, stops stuck background processes, and often lowers memory pressure immediately
- If the issue comes back quickly after every restart, one of your apps or login items is likely the cause
-
Update macOS and problem apps
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update
- Install any available macOS updates
- Then update browsers, creative apps, and other software that commonly uses a lot of memory
- Memory leaks and poor optimization are often fixed in newer versions
