Chrome can use a lot of memory on Mac because each tab, extension, and background process runs separately. That improves stability, but it also means memory usage climbs fast if you keep many tabs open or use heavy sites like Gmail, YouTube, or web apps. Corrupted cache data, outdated extensions, and low available system memory from other apps can make the problem worse.
Common Symptoms
- Chrome feels slow or freezes when switching tabs
- Your Mac’s fans spin up or the system gets hot
- You see the spinning beach ball often while browsing
- Activity Monitor shows Chrome using a large amount of memory
- Other apps slow down or macOS warns that your system is low on memory
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check which Chrome tabs or processes are using the most memory
- Open Chrome.
- Press Shift + Esc to open Chrome Task Manager.
- Click the Memory footprint column to sort by usage.
- Select any tab, extension, or process using excessive memory, then click End process.
-
Close unused tabs and remove tab groups you do not need
- Go through open tabs and close anything you are not actively using.
- If you use multiple Chrome windows, close extra windows too.
- Restart Chrome after trimming down open tabs to clear temporary memory use.
-
Disable or remove unnecessary extensions
- In Chrome, click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Go to Extensions > Manage Extensions.
- Turn off extensions you do not need.
- Remove anything unfamiliar, outdated, or rarely used.
- Reopen Chrome and check whether memory usage improves.
-
Clear Chrome cache and browsing data
- In Chrome, press Command + Shift + Delete.
- Set the time range to All time.
- Check Cached images and files.
- You can also check Cookies and other site data if websites are behaving oddly, but this may sign you out.
- Click Delete data.
-
Update Chrome
- Click the three-dot menu.
- Go to Help > About Google Chrome.
- Let Chrome check for updates and install anything available.
- Relaunch the browser when prompted.
-
Check memory usage in macOS Activity Monitor
- Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
- Click the Memory tab.
- Look for Chrome, Chrome Helper, or other apps consuming large amounts of RAM.
- If another app is using a lot of memory, quit it and test Chrome again.
-
Restart your Mac
- Click the Apple menu > Restart.
- After rebooting, open Chrome first before launching other apps.
- If Chrome memory usage is normal after a restart but rises again quickly, extensions or cached data are likely involved.
