An Xbox controller may not be recognized on Windows when the USB, Bluetooth, or wireless connection fails, the controller driver is missing or corrupted, or Windows installs the wrong device driver. It can also happen after a Windows update, low controller battery, outdated controller firmware, or a problem with USB power management. In some cases, the controller works physically but games cannot see it because Steam Input, Xbox services, or device settings are interfering.
Common Symptoms
- The controller does not appear in games, Steam, or the Xbox app
- Windows makes a connection sound, but no buttons respond
- The controller shows as an unknown device in Device Manager
- Bluetooth pairing fails or disconnects repeatedly
- The Xbox button stays flashing instead of staying solid
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check the basic connection first
- If you use a wired controller, unplug it and reconnect it to a different USB port.
- Avoid USB hubs or front panel ports if possible. Plug directly into a rear motherboard USB port.
- If you use Bluetooth, make sure the controller has enough battery charge.
- If you use an Xbox Wireless Adapter, unplug and reconnect the adapter.
-
Restart the controller and your PC
- Hold the Xbox button on the controller for about 10 seconds to turn it off.
- Turn it back on and try connecting again.
- Restart your PC from Start > Power > Restart.
- This clears temporary driver and USB detection issues.
-
Remove and reconnect the controller in Bluetooth settings
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices.
- If the controller is listed, click the three dots next to it and choose Remove device.
- Put the controller into pairing mode by holding the Pair button until the Xbox light flashes quickly.
- Click Add device > Bluetooth and select Xbox Wireless Controller.
- If you are using a newer controller, choose Bluetooth. Older Xbox One controllers may require USB or the Xbox Wireless Adapter.
-
Update or reinstall the controller driver
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth, Xbox Peripherals, Human Interface Devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for Xbox Wireless Controller, Controller, or any device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If that does not help, right-click it again and choose Uninstall device.
- Disconnect the controller, restart the PC, then reconnect it so Windows reinstalls the driver.
-
Check for Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install everything available, including optional driver updates if shown.
- Restart the PC after installation.
- Windows often delivers controller, Bluetooth, and chipset fixes through updates.
-
Update the controller firmware
- Open the Microsoft Store, search for Xbox Accessories, and install it.
- Connect the controller by USB if possible.
- Open Xbox Accessories and check whether a firmware update is available.
- Install the update, then reconnect the controller and test it again.
-
Turn off USB power saving for the device
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click each USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub, then select Properties.
- Open the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Click OK, then restart the PC.
- This can help if the controller disconnects or is only detected sometimes.
