What Causes This?

explorer.exe is the Windows process that handles the desktop, taskbar, Start menu, and File Explorer windows. It usually crashes because of corrupted system files, broken shell extensions from third-party apps, damaged temporary files, or a bad Windows update or driver. In some cases, malware, faulty display settings, or a cluttered user profile can also make Explorer unstable.

Common Symptoms

  • The taskbar and desktop disappear, then reload
  • File Explorer windows keep closing or freezing
  • Right-click menus crash Explorer immediately
  • The screen flashes black for a moment
  • You see messages like “Windows Explorer has stopped working”

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Restart Windows Explorer

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc
    • Find Windows Explorer under the Processes tab
    • Right-click it and choose Restart
    • If you do not see it, click Run new task, type explorer.exe, and press Enter
  2. Run System File Checker and DISM

    • Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin)
    • Run this command:
      sfc /scannow
    • Wait for it to finish, then run:
      DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Restart your PC after both scans complete
  3. Clear File Explorer history and temporary files

    • Press Windows + R, type:
      control folders
      then press Enter
    • In the General tab, under Privacy, click Clear
    • Next, press Windows + R, type %temp%, and press Enter
    • Delete as many files as possible in that folder
    • Repeat with temp and prefetch in the Run box
    • Temporary file corruption and clutter can trigger Explorer crashes, especially on older systems
  4. Check for a bad shell extension or startup app

    • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter
    • Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all
    • Open the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager
    • Disable non-essential startup apps
    • Restart your PC and test Explorer
    • If the crashing stops, re-enable items one at a time to find the cause
  5. Update Windows and display drivers

    • Open Settings > Windows Update
    • Click Check for updates and install anything pending
    • Then right-click Start > Device Manager
    • Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics device, and choose Update driver
    • Explorer crashes that happen when opening folders, previews, or switching windows are often tied to graphics issues
  6. Create a new Windows user account

    • Open Settings > Accounts > Other users
    • Click Add account
    • Create a new local account and sign into it
    • If Explorer works normally there, your original profile may be corrupted
