Download Kudu Free →Windows uses the pagefile (pagefile.sys) as virtual memory when RAM fills up or when apps reserve large amounts of memory. A large pagefile usually means your system is under memory pressure, Windows is managing the file size automatically, or a program is leaking memory and forcing Windows to expand it. It can also stay large after heavy use because Windows does not always shrink it immediately.
Common Symptoms
pagefile.sysis taking up several GB of space on your C: drive- Your PC feels slow when many apps or browser tabs are open
- Disk usage spikes and the system becomes less responsive
- You see “low memory” warnings or apps crash unexpectedly
- Restarting helps for a while, but the problem comes back
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check current memory usage
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Click More details if needed, then open the Processes tab.
- Sort by Memory to see which apps are using the most RAM.
- Close apps you do not need, especially browsers, games, VMs, or editing software.
-
Restart your PC
- Click Start > Power > Restart.
- This clears memory usage and can reduce pagefile growth caused by apps that were left running too long.
- After restarting, check whether performance improves before opening everything again.
-
Check pagefile settings
- Press Windows key + S, type View advanced system settings, and open it.
- Under Performance, click Settings.
- Go to the Advanced tab, then under Virtual memory, click Change.
- Make sure Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is enabled if you want Windows to handle it safely.
- If it is disabled and the custom size is unusually large, select your system drive and either:
- choose System managed size, or
- set a more reasonable custom size, then click Set.
- Click OK and restart if prompted.
-
Look for memory-heavy or faulty apps
- Open Task Manager again and watch memory use for a few minutes.
- If one app keeps climbing in memory use even when idle, update it or reinstall it.
- Also check Startup apps in Task Manager and disable anything unnecessary so fewer programs load at boot.
-
Free up disk space
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage.
- Remove temporary files, old downloads, and other large files you do not need.
- A large pagefile is more noticeable when your drive is already low on space.
-
Run a malware scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Go to Virus & threat protection > Quick scan.
- Malware can consume memory in the background and cause the pagefile to grow.
-
Consider adding more RAM
- If memory usage is often high during normal work, your PC may simply not have enough physical RAM.
- The pagefile helps, but relying on it heavily is much slower than having enough RAM installed.
