What Causes This?

Windows and many desktop apps keep installer cache files so they can repair, update, or uninstall software later. Over time, these cached .msi, .msp, setup logs, and leftover installer packages can build up in folders like C:\Windows\Installer, C:\Windows\Temp, and your user temp folders. The problem usually gets worse on PCs that install frequent app updates, large programs, or game launchers that leave behind old setup files.

Common Symptoms

  • Your system drive keeps losing space for no obvious reason
  • Storage settings shows large amounts of “Temporary files” or unexplained used space
  • You find old .msi, .cab, or installer files in Temp folders
  • Windows updates or app installs fail because the drive is too full
  • Disk Cleanup helps a little, but space fills up again quickly

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check where the space is being used

    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to System > Storage.
    3. Review categories like Temporary files, Apps, and Other to confirm installer files may be part of the problem.
  2. Clean temporary installer files with Storage Sense

    1. In Settings > System > Storage, click Temporary files.
    2. Let Windows scan the drive.
    3. Check items such as Temporary files, Delivery Optimization Files, and other safe-to-remove cache categories.
    4. Do not select Downloads unless you are sure you want to delete those files.
    5. Click Remove files.
  3. Run Disk Cleanup as administrator

    1. Press Windows, type Disk Cleanup, then right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
    2. Select your Windows drive, usually C:.
    3. Click Clean up system files.
    4. Check categories like Temporary files, Windows Update Cleanup, and Temporary Windows installation files if available.
    5. Click OK, then Delete Files.
  4. Clear the Windows Temp folder

    1. Press Windows + R, type %windir%\Temp, and press Enter.
    2. If prompted for admin permission, click Continue.
    3. Press Ctrl + A to select everything, then press Delete.
    4. Skip any files that say they are currently in use.
  5. Clear your user Temp folder

    1. Press Windows + R, type %temp%, and press Enter.
    2. Select the files with Ctrl + A.
    3. Press Delete.
    4. Again, skip anything Windows says is in use.
  6. Be careful with C:\Windows\Installer

    1. Open File Explorer and browse to C:\Windows\Installer.
    2. This folder stores Windows Installer cache files used for repair, updates, and uninstalling programs.
    3. Do not manually delete files from this folder unless you know exactly what they belong to. Removing the wrong file can break app repairs or uninstalls.
    4. If this folder is unusually large, use a cleanup tool that can identify safe leftovers instead of deleting files blindly.
  7. Restart and verify free space

    1. Restart your PC.
    2. Go back to Settings > System > Storage.
    3. Confirm that free disk space has increased and that app installs or updates work normally.
