What Causes This?

Windows browsers save autocomplete data to make forms, searches, and logins faster. Over time, that stored data can include outdated addresses, old usernames, incorrect search terms, or sensitive information you no longer want appearing in suggestions. In some cases, browser sync can also bring old autocomplete entries back from another device, making it seem like the data was never cleared.

Common Symptoms

  • Old search terms or form entries keep appearing when you type
  • Saved addresses, emails, or usernames show up in browser fields
  • Deleted suggestions return after restarting the browser
  • Private or outdated information appears in autofill prompts
  • Multiple browsers on the same PC keep similar autocomplete traces

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Close any tabs using forms or search boxes

    • Save your work first.
    • Leaving active forms open can sometimes keep recent entries in memory until the browser is restarted.
  2. Clear autocomplete data in Google Chrome

    • Open Chrome.
    • Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete to open Clear browsing data.
    • Set Time range to All time if you want a full cleanup.
    • Click the Advanced tab.
    • Check items related to saved entry history, especially:
      • Browsing history
      • Autofill form data
      • Cookies and other site data if suggestions are tied to websites
    • Click Clear data.
    • Restart Chrome and test a form field.
  3. Clear autocomplete data in Microsoft Edge

    • Open Edge.
    • Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
    • Choose All time from the time range menu.
    • Check:
      • Browsing history
      • Download history if needed
      • Cookies and other site data
      • Autofill form data (includes forms and cards)
    • Click Clear now.
    • If entries come back, go to Settings > Profiles > Personal info and review saved addresses, payment info, and form data.
  4. Clear autocomplete data in Mozilla Firefox

    • Open Firefox.
    • Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
    • Set Time range to clear to Everything.
    • Check Browsing & Download History, Form & Search History, and Cookies if needed.
    • Click Clear Now.
    • To remove specific saved form entries, click into a form field, highlight the unwanted suggestion with the arrow keys, and press Delete or Shift+Delete.
  5. Turn off or review autofill settings

    • In Chrome: go to Settings > Autofill and passwords.
    • In Edge: go to Settings > Profiles > Personal info and Payment info.
    • In Firefox: go to Settings > Privacy & Security and look for History and form/autofill options.
    • Remove saved addresses, cards, or personal details you no longer want suggested.
  6. Check sync if deleted data keeps returning

    • In Chrome or Edge, open your profile settings and temporarily turn off Sync.
    • Clear the autocomplete data again.
    • Reopen the browser and confirm the entries are gone before turning sync back on.
    • If needed, repeat this on your other signed-in devices.
  7. Restart the browser or your PC

    • Close the browser completely.
    • If it still shows old suggestions, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, end any remaining browser processes, then reopen it.
    • A full restart can help clear cached session data.
