Outlook search usually stops working when Windows Search indexing is incomplete, corrupted, or not including Outlook data properly. It can also happen if the Outlook profile is damaged, the app is out of date, or add-ins are interfering with search. In some cases, the issue is tied to a broken PST/OST data file or Windows system problems affecting the search service.

- Outlook search returns no results even when you know the email exists
- Recent emails do not appear in search results
- Search gets stuck on messages like "Searching..." or "Something went wrong"
- Outlook only finds some emails, contacts, or attachments
- Search works very slowly or stops after a Windows update
How to Fix It Manually

Restart Outlook and your PC
- Close Outlook completely.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - In the Processes tab, make sure Microsoft Outlook is not still running. If it is, select it and click End task.
- Restart your computer, then open Outlook and test search again.

Check that Outlook is included in Windows indexing
- Close Outlook.
- Open the Start menu, type Indexing Options, and open it.
- Click Modify.
- Make sure Microsoft Outlook is checked in the list.
- Click OK, then return to the main Indexing Options window.
- If the number of indexed items is very low or indexing is paused, let it finish and test again.

Rebuild the search index
- Open Indexing Options again.
- Click Advanced.
- Under the Index Settings tab, click Rebuild.
- Confirm the prompt. This can take time depending on mailbox size.
- Open Outlook after the rebuild starts or finishes and test search. During rebuilding, results may be incomplete.

Run Outlook’s search troubleshooting tools
- In Outlook, click inside the search box.
- Open the Search tab, then choose Search Tools > Indexing Status.
- If it says items are still being indexed, wait until indexing completes.
- You can also go to File > Options > Search > Indexing Options to confirm Outlook is being indexed.

Repair Office
- Close all Office apps.
- Press
Windows+Ito open Settings. - Go to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows versions).
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office, click the three dots or select it, then choose Modify.
- Run Quick Repair first. If search still fails, repeat the steps and run Online Repair.

Start Outlook in Safe Mode and disable add-ins
- Press
Windows+R, typeoutlook.exe /safe, then pressEnter. - Test search in Safe Mode.
- If it works, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage COM Add-ins, click Go.
- Uncheck add-ins one at a time, restart Outlook normally, and test after each change.

Create a new Outlook profile
- Close Outlook.
- Open Control Panel and set View by to Large icons.
- Click Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles.
- Click Add, create a new profile, and sign in with your email account.
- Set the new profile as the default and open Outlook.
- If search works in the new profile, the old profile was likely corrupted.
