Microsoft Office activation errors usually happen when Office can’t verify your license with Microsoft’s servers or when the installed product key doesn’t match the version of Office on your PC. This can be caused by signing into the wrong Microsoft account, expired Microsoft 365 subscriptions, leftover files from an older Office install, or Windows date, time, and network issues. In some cases, damaged Office licensing files or disabled background services also stop activation from completing.
Common Symptoms
- Office apps show “Product Activation Failed” in the title bar
- You see error codes during activation, such as 0xC004F074 or 0x80070005
- Word, Excel, or Outlook open in reduced functionality mode
- Office asks you to activate every time you open an app
- You can’t edit documents or install Office updates
