Firefox video lag and stuttering usually happens when your PC is struggling to decode video smoothly in real time. Common causes include broken or outdated graphics drivers, Firefox hardware acceleration conflicts, too many background apps using CPU or RAM, or browser extensions interfering with playback. In some cases, high power-saving settings or corrupted Firefox cache data can also make streaming video feel choppy.
Common Symptoms
- YouTube, Twitch, or other videos pause briefly or skip frames
- Audio keeps playing, but the video freezes or falls behind
- Firefox uses unusually high CPU or memory during playback
- Video only stutters in Firefox, while other browsers play normally
- Full-screen playback is worse than windowed playback
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check system usage while the video is lagging
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Click More details if needed.
- On the Processes tab, look for high usage from Firefox, browser helpers, or other apps using lots of CPU, Memory, or GPU.
- Close unnecessary apps like game launchers, screen recorders, cloud sync tools, or extra browser windows.
-
Turn Firefox hardware acceleration off
- Open Firefox.
- Click the menu button in the top-right, then select Settings.
- In the General section, scroll down to Performance.
- Uncheck Use recommended performance settings.
- Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Restart Firefox and test video playback again.
- If playback gets worse instead of better, turn hardware acceleration back on and continue with the next steps.
-
Update your graphics driver
- Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics card and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows does not find a newer driver, download the latest one directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel and install it.
- Restart your PC after updating.
-
Clear Firefox cache
- In Firefox, click the menu button > Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to Cookies and Site Data.
- Click Clear Data.
- Check Cached Web Content, then click Clear.
- Restart Firefox and test the same video again.
-
Disable extensions that may interfere with playback
- In Firefox, press Ctrl+Shift+A to open Add-ons and themes.
- Disable ad blockers, video downloaders, VPN extensions, or performance tools one at a time.
- Test video playback after each change to find the extension causing the issue.
-
Change Windows power mode
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, choose Best performance or Balanced instead of a battery-saving mode.
- If you are on a laptop, plug in the charger and test playback again.
-
Test Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode
- Click the Firefox menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode.
- Click Restart, then confirm.
- This temporarily disables extensions and custom settings.
- If videos play smoothly in this mode, the problem is likely caused by an extension or Firefox setting.
