What Causes This?

Microsoft Defender virus definitions, also called security intelligence, can fall behind when Windows Update is paused, blocked, or failing in the background. This can also happen if your internet connection is unstable, required update services are disabled, or another antivirus program is interfering with Defender. In some cases, corrupted update files or a system date and time issue can stop definition updates from installing correctly.

Common Symptoms

  • Windows Security shows security intelligence is out of date
  • Defender scans run, but the virus definition version is old
  • You see update errors in Windows Security or Windows Update
  • Real-time protection works inconsistently or turns off unexpectedly
  • Your PC feels exposed after long periods without security updates

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check Defender’s current status

    1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to Privacy & security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security.
    3. Click Virus & threat protection.
    4. Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Protection updates.
    5. Check the Security intelligence version and the last update time.
  2. Manually check for new Defender updates

    1. In the Protection updates screen, click Check for updates.
    2. Wait for Windows to download and install the latest security intelligence.
    3. If it succeeds, restart your PC and confirm the version has changed.
  3. Run Windows Update

    1. Open Settings with Windows key + I.
    2. Go to Windows Update.
    3. Click Check for updates.
    4. Install any pending updates, especially security and platform updates for Microsoft Defender.
    5. Restart your PC if prompted.
  4. Make sure Windows Update services are running

    1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    2. Find Windows Update in the list.
    3. Double-click it and make sure Startup type is set to Manual or Automatic.
    4. If Service status says Stopped, click Start.
    5. Do the same for Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
  5. Check if another antivirus is disabling Defender

    1. Open Windows Security and go to Virus & threat protection.
    2. If another antivirus is active, Defender may not update normally.
    3. If you recently installed third-party antivirus software, update that app or remove it if you want Defender to be your main protection.
    4. Restart the PC after making changes.
  6. Use PowerShell to force a Defender definition update

    1. Click Start, type PowerShell.
    2. Right-click Windows PowerShell and choose Run as administrator.
    3. Enter this command and press Enter:
      Update-MpSignature
    4. Wait for the command to complete, then reopen Windows Security and verify the new version.
  7. Check date, time, and internet connection

    1. Right-click the clock in the taskbar and choose Adjust date and time.
    2. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.
    3. Confirm your internet connection is stable, then try the update again.
    4. If you use a VPN or strict firewall, temporarily disable it and test once more.
