Spyware that monitors keystrokes and screen activity is designed to run quietly in the background, often disguised as a normal app, browser extension, or startup process. It usually gets installed through fake downloads, bundled software, phishing attachments, malicious browser add-ons, or remote access tools left behind after a compromise. In some cases, it may also arrive through a cracked program or a “system optimizer” that is actually malware.

Common Symptoms

  • Unknown processes using CPU, memory, or disk activity when you are not doing much
  • Browser extensions, apps, or startup items you do not recognize
  • Frequent security warnings, disabled antivirus, or blocked security settings
  • Unexplained screenshots, clipboard issues, or signs that typed passwords may be exposed
  • Slow performance, network activity spikes, or webcam/microphone access without a clear reason

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Disconnect the PC from the internet

    • Turn off Wi-Fi from the taskbar, or unplug the Ethernet cable.
    • This can stop spyware from sending captured keystrokes, screenshots, or clipboard data to a remote server.
  2. Check for suspicious processes in Task Manager

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Click More details if needed.
    • Look under Processes for unfamiliar apps, especially ones with odd names, high resource usage, or no clear publisher.
    • Right-click a suspicious process and choose Open file location. If it points to a strange folder under AppData, Temp, or an unknown program folder, note it.
    • If you are confident it is not legitimate, right-click it and select End task.
  3. Review startup programs

    • In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab.
    • Disable anything you do not recognize or do not need, especially entries with Unknown publisher.
    • Also go to Settings > Apps > Startup and review the same list for anything suspicious.
  4. Uninstall suspicious apps and browser extensions

    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Sort by Install date and remove anything unfamiliar, recently installed, or clearly unwanted.
    • Then check your browser extensions:
      • Chrome/Edge: Open the browser, go to Extensions, and remove unknown add-ons.
      • Firefox: Open Add-ons and themes and disable or remove anything suspicious.
    • Pay close attention to extensions that request access to “read and change all your data” or capture page content.
  5. Run Microsoft Defender scans

    • Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
    • Go to Virus & threat protection.
    • Click Scan options and run a Full scan.
    • If you suspect something deeper, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Your PC will restart and scan before Windows fully loads, which can catch spyware that hides during normal use.
  6. Check remote access and permissions

    • Open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and make sure it is Off unless you use it.
    • Go to Settings > Privacy & security and review permissions for Microphone, Camera, and Screen capture-related apps where applicable.
    • Remove access for apps you do not trust.
  7. Change important passwords from a clean device

    • If keystrokes may have been captured, assume passwords are exposed.
    • Use a different trusted device to change passwords for email, banking, work accounts, and password managers.
    • Turn on two-factor authentication wherever possible.
  8. Update Windows and security tools

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates.
    • Restart the PC and run another security scan.
    • If the spyware returns after reboot, you may be dealing with a persistent startup task or deeper infection.
