How to Disable Remote Assistance on Windows If You Never Use It

What Causes This?

Remote Assistance is a built-in Windows feature that lets someone connect to your PC to help troubleshoot problems. On many systems, it stays available by default even if you never use it, which leaves an unnecessary remote access feature enabled. While it does not usually cause direct problems on its own, turning it off is a sensible hardening step if you do not need remote help.

Common Symptoms

  • Remote access features are enabled in System settings even though you never use them
  • You want to reduce unnecessary Windows features for better security
  • You see Remote Assistance options in advanced system settings and are unsure if they should be on
  • You are reviewing privacy or security settings after setting up a new PC
  • You want to lock down a shared or work-from-home computer

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Open Advanced System Settings.

    • Press Windows + R to open Run.
    • Type sysdm.cpl and press Enter.
    • In the System Properties window, click the Remote tab.
  2. Turn off Remote Assistance.

    • Under Remote Assistance, uncheck Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer.
    • Click Apply.
  3. Review Remote Desktop settings in the same window.

    • Under Remote Desktop, make sure it is set the way you want.
    • If you do not use remote access at all, select Don't allow remote connections to this computer if that option is available on your edition of Windows.
    • Click OK.
  4. Confirm the setting in Windows Security-related menus.

    • Open Settings with Windows + I.
    • Go to System > Remote Desktop.
    • If Remote Desktop is turned on and you do not use it, switch it Off.
    • Note: Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance are different features, but many users disable both for a more locked-down setup.
  5. Check the Group Policy setting if Remote Assistance keeps turning back on.

    • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
    • Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Remote Assistance.
    • Double-click Configure Offer Remote Assistance.
    • Set it to Disabled, then click Apply and OK.
    • If you are on Windows Home, Group Policy Editor may not be available. In that case, use the System Properties method above.
  6. Restart your PC.

    • Click Start > Power > Restart.
    • After rebooting, repeat Step 1 and make sure Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer is still unchecked.
  7. If the setting is managed by your organization, stop here.

    • On work or school PCs, a company policy may re-enable remote support features automatically.
    • If the setting is greyed out or reverts after restart, contact your IT admin instead of forcing more changes.
