SmartScreen can become disabled or unavailable when Windows security settings are changed by Group Policy, registry edits, third-party antivirus software, or a damaged Windows Security configuration. It can also happen after a Windows update problem, when required security services are not running, or if the PC is managed by a work or school organization. In some cases, the setting is greyed out simply because another security tool has taken control of app reputation and web protection features.
Common Symptoms
- The SmartScreen setting is greyed out in Windows Security
- You see messages saying SmartScreen is turned off or unavailable
- Apps and downloads are no longer being checked for reputation warnings
- Windows Security shows limited protection or missing options
- You cannot turn SmartScreen back on even as an administrator
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check SmartScreen settings in Windows Security
- Press Windows + I to open Settings
- Go to Privacy & security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security
- Click App & browser control
- Under Reputation-based protection, click Reputation-based protection settings
- Make sure these are turned on where available:
- Check apps and files
- SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge
- Potentially unwanted app blocking
- SmartScreen for Microsoft Store apps
-
Make sure Microsoft Defender services are running
- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, then press Enter - Find Security Center
- Double-click it and make sure Startup type is set to Automatic (Delayed Start) or Automatic
- Click Start if the service is stopped
- Also check Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service if it appears on your system
- Press Windows + R, type
-
Check whether a work, school, or policy setting is blocking SmartScreen
- Press Windows + R, type
gpedit.msc, then press Enter - Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer
- Open Configure Windows Defender SmartScreen
- Set it to Not Configured or Enabled
- Next go to Windows Components > Microsoft Defender SmartScreen > Explorer
- Review any SmartScreen policies and set restrictive entries back to Not Configured
- If your PC is managed by your employer or school, these settings may be locked intentionally
- Press Windows + R, type
-
Check for registry settings that disable SmartScreen
- Press Windows + R, type
regedit, then press Enter - Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer - Look for a value named SmartScreenEnabled
- A normal value is usually Warn or RequireAdmin
- If it is missing, incorrect, or forced by another tool, correct it carefully
- Also check:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System - If you see policy values disabling SmartScreen, remove them only if you know they were not set by your organization
- Press Windows + R, type
-
Temporarily check for conflicts from third-party antivirus or security tools
- Open your antivirus or internet security app
- Look for web protection, reputation protection, or download scanning features
- Temporarily disable them and restart the PC
- Reopen Windows Security > App & browser control and see if SmartScreen is available again
- If it works, your third-party security software is likely overriding the setting
-
Repair Windows system files
- Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin)
- Run this command:
sfc /scannow
- After it finishes, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Restart your PC and check SmartScreen again
