Many Windows apps add themselves to startup so they launch every time you sign in, even when you did not explicitly allow it. Some do this through the Startup apps list, Task Scheduler, background services, or registry run entries. Once running, they may immediately check for updates, sync data, send telemetry, or reconnect to cloud services in the background.
Common Symptoms
- Apps reopen on every login even after you close them
- Your PC feels slow for the first few minutes after signing in
- Fans spin up or CPU, disk, or network usage spikes at startup
- You notice unexpected outbound network activity from third-party apps
- Battery drains faster on a laptop when idle after login
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check which apps start automatically
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Click Startup apps in the left sidebar on Windows 11, or the Startup tab on Windows 10.
- Look at the Status and Startup impact columns.
- Right-click any non-essential app and choose Disable.
-
Turn off startup permissions in Settings
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Startup.
- Review the list of apps allowed to start at login.
- Turn Off anything you do not need immediately after sign-in, especially chat apps, launchers, update helpers, and vendor utilities.
-
Stop apps from running in the background
- In Settings, go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Click the three dots next to a suspicious app, then select Advanced options if available.
- Under Background apps permissions, set it to Never.
- If you do not use the app, choose Uninstall instead.
-
Check Task Scheduler for hidden launch tasks
- Press Windows key, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Click Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for tasks from third-party software that trigger At log on or At startup.
- Right-click unnecessary tasks and choose Disable.
- Be careful not to disable Microsoft or hardware driver tasks unless you know what they do.
-
Review background services
- Press Windows key + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- Open the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services first.
- Look through the remaining services for updater tools, telemetry agents, or software you no longer use.
- Untick unwanted entries, click Apply, then restart your PC.
-
See which app is using the network after login
- Open Task Manager again and click Processes.
- Sort by the Network column.
- If an app you do not trust is sending traffic, right-click it and choose Open file location to identify it.
- You can then disable its startup entry, uninstall it, or block it in Windows Defender Firewall > Advanced settings if needed.
-
Restart and verify
- Restart your PC.
- After signing in, wait 1-2 minutes and recheck Task Manager.
- Confirm the app no longer launches and that network activity is lower.
