Webcam lag on Windows usually happens when your PC is too busy to process video smoothly. Background apps, startup programs, browser tabs, screen recording tools, and temporary system clutter can all use CPU, memory, disk, or bandwidth that your webcam app needs.
It can also happen if the webcam is running at a resolution your system struggles to handle, or if another app is competing for access to the camera. In some cases, outdated webcam drivers or USB connection issues make the video feed stutter, freeze, or fall behind.
Common Symptoms
- Webcam video looks choppy, delayed, or freezes for a second at a time
- Audio and video go out of sync during calls or recordings
- Video calls lag more when other apps are open
- The camera works, but image quality drops or frame rate becomes unstable
- Webcam problems are worse after the PC has been running for a while
How to Fix It Manually
-
Close background apps using system resources
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- In the Processes tab, look for apps using high CPU, Memory, or Disk.
- Close anything you do not need, especially browsers with many tabs, game launchers, cloud sync apps, RGB software, and screen recorders.
- If you are using a video call app in a browser, close extra tabs and extensions.
-
Restart the webcam app and your PC
- Fully close the app using the webcam, such as Zoom, Teams, Discord, or your browser.
- Restart your PC from Start > Power > Restart.
- After rebooting, open only the app you need and test the camera again.
- This clears stuck processes and temporary memory issues that often cause lag.
-
Reduce webcam load in the app settings
- Open your video app’s Settings or Video menu.
- Lower the camera resolution if available, such as from 1080p to 720p.
- Turn off features like background blur, background effects, auto-framing, or HD video to reduce processing load.
- Test the webcam again after each change.
-
Check for apps using the camera in the background
- Open Settings with Windows+I.
- Go to Privacy & security > Camera.
- Review which apps have camera access and close any app that may be using the webcam in the background.
- If needed, turn camera access off for apps you do not use.
-
Update or reinstall the webcam driver
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras or Imaging devices.
- Right-click your webcam and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If lag continues, right-click the webcam again and choose Uninstall device, then restart your PC so Windows reinstalls it.
- If you use a USB webcam, unplug it and reconnect it after restarting.
-
Clear temporary files and reduce startup clutter
- Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files.
- Select items you want to remove, then click Remove files.
- Next, open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable non-essential programs that launch with Windows.
- Too many startup and background apps can make webcam performance worse even if the camera itself is fine.
