OneDrive usually spikes CPU usage when it gets stuck syncing a large number of files, repeatedly retries failed uploads, or runs into conflicts with corrupted cache data. It can also happen if Windows has too many background apps competing for disk and CPU time while OneDrive is indexing changes. In some cases, temporary files, outdated OneDrive components, or a damaged sync configuration keep the process busy longer than it should be.

- Open Task Manager again.
- Under Processes, close apps you do not need, especially browsers with many tabs, launchers, and cloud apps.
- In Settings > Apps > Startup, disable non-essential startup apps so fewer programs compete with OneDrive after boot.
-
Update Windows and OneDrive
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install any pending updates and restart.
- Then open OneDrive, click the gear icon > Settings, and make sure it is running normally after the reboot.
-
Unlink and reconnect OneDrive if the issue continues
- Click the OneDrive icon > gear icon > Settings.
- Go to Account > Unlink this PC.
- Sign in again and choose your OneDrive folder.
