What Causes This?
Mouse stuttering on Windows usually happens when the system is under load or the mouse signal is being interrupted. Common causes include high CPU or disk usage from background apps, outdated or corrupted mouse and USB drivers, power-saving settings that turn off USB devices, and interference with wireless mice. In some cases, display settings like low refresh rate or graphics driver issues can also make mouse movement feel jerky.
Common Symptoms
- The cursor freezes briefly, then jumps across the screen
- Mouse movement feels laggy or uneven during normal use
- Stuttering gets worse while opening apps, gaming, or browsing
- A wireless mouse disconnects or becomes choppy at random
- The issue started after a Windows update or driver change
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check system load in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, look for apps using unusually high CPU, Memory, or Disk.
- If something is spiking usage, select it and click End task if it is safe to close.
- Pay special attention to browsers with many tabs, game launchers, sync tools, and antivirus scans.
-
Restart or reconnect the mouse
- If you use a USB mouse, unplug it and plug it into a different USB port.
- If you use a wireless mouse, replace or recharge the battery.
- Move the wireless receiver to a front USB port or closer to the mouse if possible.
- Remove nearby sources of interference like USB hubs, Wi-Fi adapters, or other wireless dongles.
-
Update or reinstall the mouse driver
- Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click your mouse and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If that does not help, right-click the mouse again and choose Uninstall device, then restart your PC so Windows reinstalls it.
-
Disable USB power saving
- In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click each USB Root Hub entry, choose Properties, then open the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Click OK and repeat for other USB Root Hub entries.
-
Adjust mouse and display settings
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings.
- On the Pointer Options tab, lower or raise the pointer speed slightly and test movement.
- Then go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and make sure your monitor is using the correct refresh rate.
-
Install Windows and graphics updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
- Install any available updates, including optional driver updates if relevant.
- If the problem started after a graphics driver update, try installing the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel directly.
-
Reduce background clutter and startup load
- In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab.
- Disable apps you do not need running at startup, especially overlays, launchers, and sync utilities.
- Run Disk Cleanup by pressing Windows + S, typing Disk Cleanup, and removing temporary files.
