What Causes This?

A Windows PC fan usually runs constantly when the system is generating more heat than normal. The most common causes are high CPU or disk usage from background apps, too many startup programs, Windows updates, malware, dust buildup, or power settings that keep performance high all the time. On laptops, poor airflow or blocked vents can make the fan stay loud even during light use.

Common Symptoms

  • The fan stays loud even when you are not doing much
  • The laptop or desktop feels unusually warm
  • Windows feels slow, stutters, or takes longer to open apps
  • CPU, memory, or disk usage is often high in Task Manager
  • The fan starts spinning hard soon after startup

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check what is using your PC’s resources

    • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
    • On the Processes tab, click CPU to sort by highest usage.
    • Look for apps or background processes using a lot of CPU, Memory, or Disk.
    • If you find a non-essential app stuck at high usage, select it and click End task.
  2. Disable unnecessary startup apps

    • In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab.
    • Review apps marked Enabled, especially ones with High impact.
    • Right-click anything you do not need at startup and choose Disable.
    • Restart your PC and see if the fan settles down after boot.
  3. Let Windows Update finish

    • Open Settings > Windows Update.
    • Check whether updates are downloading or installing.
    • If updates are pending, let them complete, then restart the PC.
    • A fan that runs hard during updates often returns to normal afterward.
  4. Scan for malware

    • Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
    • Go to Virus & threat protection.
    • Click Quick scan. If your PC still seems busy afterward, run Scan options > Full scan.
    • Malware can keep the CPU active in the background and make the fan run constantly.
  5. Change power settings

    • Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
    • Under Power mode, choose Balanced or Best power efficiency instead of a high-performance mode.
    • On some systems, this reduces heat and fan noise immediately.
  6. Improve airflow and clean dust

    • Shut down the PC completely and unplug it.
    • Make sure vents are not blocked by blankets, carpet, or a wall.
    • If you are comfortable doing so, clean visible dust from vents with compressed air.
    • Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface so heat can escape properly.
  7. Check for browser overload

    • Close tabs you do not need, especially video, streaming, or web apps.
    • Disable unnecessary browser extensions.
    • Browsers are a common reason fans stay active, especially with many tabs open.
