Pop-ups on Windows are usually caused by adware, unwanted browser extensions, spammy website notification permissions, or programs that were bundled with free downloads. In some cases, the pop-ups come from startup apps or scheduled tasks that keep reopening ads even after you close them. Browser data like cookies and cached scripts can also help these unwanted prompts keep coming back.
Common Symptoms
- Ads or pop-up windows appear even when you are not browsing
- Your browser opens random tabs or redirects you to unfamiliar sites
- You see fake virus alerts, prize messages, or “update required” warnings
- New toolbars, extensions, or search engines appear without your permission
- Windows feels slower after the pop-ups started
How to Fix It Manually
-
Check if the pop-ups are coming from your browser
- If the pop-ups only appear in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, the issue is likely browser notifications, extensions, or adware tied to that browser.
- If they appear on the desktop outside the browser, check installed apps and startup programs.
-
Remove suspicious programs
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Sort by Install date and look for recently added programs you do not recognize.
- Click the three dots next to a suspicious app and choose Uninstall.
- Remove browser toolbars, “PC cleaners,” coupon apps, or anything you did not intentionally install.
-
Disable unwanted startup items
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Click the Startup apps tab.
- Look for unknown or unnecessary apps with High impact.
- Right-click suspicious entries and choose Disable.
- Restart your PC and see if the pop-ups stop.
-
Remove browser notification permissions
- In Google Chrome: open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications.
- In Microsoft Edge: open Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Notifications.
- In Firefox: open Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Notifications > Settings.
- Remove or block sites you do not trust, especially ones sending constant alerts.
-
Delete suspicious browser extensions and reset browser settings
- Open your browser’s Extensions or Add-ons page.
- Remove anything you did not install yourself.
- If the problem continues, reset the browser:
- Chrome: Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults
- Edge: Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values
- Firefox: type
about:supportin the address bar and use Refresh Firefox
- This clears unwanted changes like altered homepages and search engines.
-
Run a Windows Security scan
- Press Windows + I and go to Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Click Scan options.
- Select Full scan, then click Scan now.
- Let Windows check for adware or other unwanted software and remove anything it finds.
-
Clear browser data
- In your browser, open History and choose Clear browsing data.
- Delete Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
- This can remove tracking data and scripts tied to recurring pop-ups.
