A suspicious process on a Mac is usually caused by adware, a poorly made app, a fake system utility, or leftover background software that keeps running after you uninstall something. In some cases, the process is legitimate but uses a misleading name, consumes too many resources, or loads automatically through login items and launch agents. The real problem is often not just the process itself, but the related files that let it come back after you force quit it.
Common Symptoms
- Your Mac suddenly runs hot, slow, or loud because of high CPU usage
- You see an unfamiliar process name in Activity Monitor
- Pop-ups, browser redirects, or unwanted ads start appearing
- An app or background process reopens after you quit it
- Login items or startup behavior changed without your approval
How to Fix It Manually
-
Identify the suspicious process in Activity Monitor
- Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
- Click the CPU tab, then sort by % CPU to find processes using the most resources.
- Look for names you do not recognize, especially ones tied to pop-ups, browser issues, or recent software installs.
-
Check what the process is before removing it
- Select the process, then click the Info button at the top of Activity Monitor.
- Review the Process Name, Parent Process, and file path if shown.
- Search the process name online to confirm whether it belongs to macOS, Apple, or software you intentionally installed.
- Do not remove known system processes unless you are certain they are malicious.
-
Force quit the process
- In Activity Monitor, select the suspicious process.
- Click the Stop button, then choose Force Quit.
- If it immediately comes back, it is likely being relaunched by a login item, launch agent, or helper file.
-
Remove the related app
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Find any app connected to the suspicious process or any recently installed app you do not trust.
- Drag it to the Trash.
- If the app has its own uninstaller, use that first.
-
Disable startup items
- Open System Settings > General > Login Items.
- Under Open at Login, remove anything unfamiliar.
- Also review Allow in the Background and turn off suspicious entries.
- Restart your Mac and check whether the process returns.
-
Delete leftover support files
- In Finder, click Go > Go to Folder.
- Check these folders one at a time:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/Library/LaunchAgents/Library/LaunchDaemons~/Library/Application Support
- Look for files or folders matching the suspicious app or process name, then move them to the Trash.
- Be careful not to delete Apple or known software files unless you are sure they are related.
-
Scan browser extensions if the issue seems adware-related
- In Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Extensions and remove anything suspicious.
- In Chrome, open
chrome://extensionsand remove unknown extensions. - In Firefox, open Add-ons and Themes and review installed extensions.
-
Restart your Mac and verify
- Restart the Mac normally.
- Open Activity Monitor again and confirm the process is gone.
- If it returns, there are likely leftover startup files or junk entries still loading in the background.
