Mail storage can contain downloaded attachments and locally stored messages. A folder that looks like cache may be the only copy of a message or file.
Review and Clean Manually
-
Confirm whether the account is IMAP, Exchange, POP, or local-only. Verify server copies and backups before removing anything.
-
Use Mail’s storage and attachment options for the specific account or messages you intend to change.
-
Save attachments you need to a backed-up folder. Read whether an attachment removal affects other devices.
-
Do not delete ~/Library/Mail, Envelope Index, or a whole Mail container as a cleanup shortcut.
-
Reopen Mail and verify both recent and older messages are still available.
Where Kudu Helps
Kudu’s app rules target documented cache paths. It does not decide which mail or attachments are disposable. Keep message stores and offline mail out of the cleanup scope.
Open Clean up > System Cleaner and run Scan. Review the relevant category and expand its results to inspect the paths. Set exclusions for anything you need to keep, then check the full selected total before Clean. Results search filters the view; it does not erase selections elsewhere.
After cleaning, check the summary and Activity > Cleanup receipts for removed, skipped, or failed items. A receipt is an outcome record, not a backup. Recovery Centre restores supported settings, not deleted files. Compare actual disk free space and test the original symptom; cache removal alone is not a promise of better performance.
