What Causes This?

Too many apps set themselves to launch automatically when you sign in, even if you rarely use them. Over time, these background apps can pile up and slow down startup, use memory, and keep running silently in the background. Some apps also leave behind helper processes or leftover files after you disable them, which adds extra clutter.

Common Symptoms

  • Your Mac takes much longer than usual to finish starting up
  • Several apps open automatically every time you log in
  • The desktop feels slow or unresponsive right after sign-in
  • Fans run more often or memory usage stays high with nothing open
  • You see menu bar apps or background tools you do not remember enabling

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Check your Login Items in System Settings

    1. Click the Apple menu and open System Settings.
    2. Scroll down and click General.
    3. Select Login Items & Extensions.
    4. Under Open at Login, review the list of apps that start when you sign in.
  2. Remove apps you do not need at startup

    1. Click an app in the Open at Login list.
    2. Click the minus (-) button to remove it.
    3. Repeat this for any app you do not want launching automatically.
    4. Leave security software, input tools, or apps you rely on every day if you are unsure.
  3. Disable unnecessary background permissions

    1. In the same Login Items & Extensions screen, look for Allow in the Background.
    2. Turn off switches for apps that do not need to run constantly.
    3. Be careful with cloud sync, antivirus, VPN, or hardware utility apps unless you know what they do.
  4. Check the Dock for startup settings

    1. If an app keeps opening at login, right-click its icon in the Dock.
    2. Go to Options.
    3. Make sure Open at Login is unchecked.
  5. Remove startup apps from inside the app itself

    1. Open the app that keeps launching automatically.
    2. Look in Settings, Preferences, or General.
    3. Disable options like Launch at login, Start when Mac starts, or Run in background.
    4. Quit the app and restart your Mac to confirm the change worked.
  6. Uninstall apps you no longer use

    1. Open Finder and go to Applications.
    2. Drag unused apps to the Trash, or use the app’s built-in uninstaller if it has one.
    3. Empty the Trash.
    4. Restart your Mac and check whether startup is faster.
  7. Review leftover helper items

    1. In Finder, click Go > Go to Folder.
    2. Check these folders one at a time:
      • ~/Library/LaunchAgents
      • /Library/LaunchAgents
      • /Library/LaunchDaemons
    3. Look for files tied to apps you already removed.
    4. If you are certain a file belongs to unused software, move it carefully to the Trash.
    5. Restart your Mac after making changes.
