System Thread Exception Not Handled usually appears as a blue screen when Windows hits a driver or system-level error it can’t recover from. In many cases, the crash is tied to bad, outdated, or incompatible drivers, corrupted system files, or problems triggered after a Windows update or hardware change. Leftover crash files, broken startup items, and unstable third-party software can also make the issue keep coming back.

What Causes This?

This error usually happens when a system thread in Windows crashes because of a faulty or incompatible driver. Graphics drivers, Wi-Fi drivers, storage drivers, and antivirus software are common triggers.

It can also be caused by corrupted Windows system files, failed updates, BIOS issues, or damaged startup components. If the crash started after installing new hardware or software, that change is often the best place to start.

Common Symptoms

  • A blue screen with the message SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
  • Windows restarts unexpectedly or gets stuck in a reboot loop
  • The PC crashes shortly after startup or login
  • Problems begin after a driver update, Windows update, or new hardware install
  • Slow startup or instability before the blue screen appears

How to Fix It Manually

  1. Boot into Safe Mode if Windows keeps crashing

    • Hold Shift and click Restart from the sign-in screen or Start menu.
    • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    • Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
    • If the PC is stable in Safe Mode, a driver or startup app is likely causing the crash.
  2. Roll back or update problem drivers

    • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    • Expand likely problem categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, and Storage controllers.
    • Right-click the device, choose Properties, then open the Driver tab.
    • If the issue started after an update, click Roll Back Driver.
    • If rollback is unavailable, click Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    • For graphics drivers, it’s often better to download the latest version directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
  3. Remove recently installed software or hardware

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps and uninstall any driver tools, antivirus programs, or utilities installed just before the crashes began.
    • Disconnect newly added hardware like USB adapters, external drives, or expansion cards, then restart and test again.
  4. Repair Windows system files

    • Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
      • Press Windows, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
    • Run these commands one at a time:
      1. sfc /scannow
      2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Restart your PC after both scans finish.
  5. Check for Windows updates

    • Open Settings > Windows Update.
    • Click Check for updates and install all available updates.
    • Also select Advanced options > Optional updates and install relevant driver updates if offered.
  6. Turn off Fast Startup

    • Press Windows + S, type control panel, and open it.
    • Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    • Uncheck Turn on fast startup, then click Save changes.
    • Restart the PC and see if the blue screen returns.
  7. Use System Restore if the issue started recently

    • Press Windows + S, type restore point, and open Create a restore point.
    • Click System Restore and choose a restore point from before the crashes started.
    • Follow the prompts to roll Windows back to a stable state.
