A Clock Watchdog Timeout blue screen usually means one CPU core stopped responding to system interrupts in time. In practice, this is often caused by unstable drivers, BIOS or firmware issues, bad overclock settings, corrupted system files, or hardware problems involving the CPU, RAM, or motherboard. It can also happen after a Windows update, driver change, or when the system is overheating under load.
Common Symptoms
- Blue screen with the stop code CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT
- Random restarts during gaming, startup, or heavy CPU use
- Freezing before Windows fully loads
- Crashes after installing drivers, updates, or changing BIOS settings
- System instability when the PC gets hot or runs demanding apps
How to Fix It Manually

Remove overclocking and load BIOS defaults
- Restart your PC and enter BIOS/UEFI by pressing Delete, F2, or the key shown on startup.
- Find any CPU, RAM, or XMP/EXPO overclock settings and disable them.
- Choose Load Optimized Defaults or Load Setup Defaults, then save and restart.
- If the error started after tweaking voltages or frequencies, this is the first thing to undo.

Start Windows in Safe Mode if normal boot is unstable
- Hold Shift and select Restart from the Windows sign-in screen or Start menu.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Safe Mode loads minimal drivers, which makes it easier to remove the cause.

Update or roll back drivers
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand key categories like Display adapters, Processors, System devices, and Storage controllers.
- Right-click a recently updated device and choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver if available.
- Otherwise choose Update driver, or download the latest chipset, storage, and graphics drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer.
- If the crash began after a driver install, uninstall that driver first and restart.

Repair Windows system files
- Open Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin) by pressing Windows + X.
- Run:
sfc /scannow - After that, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Restart the PC after both scans finish.

Check for BIOS and Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install all pending updates.
- Visit your motherboard or laptop maker’s support page and compare your BIOS version with the latest release.
- If a newer BIOS specifically mentions CPU stability, system stability, or microcode fixes, update it carefully using the manufacturer’s instructions.

Test hardware stability
- Press Windows + R, type
mdsched.exe, and press Enter to run Windows Memory Diagnostic. - Choose Restart now and check for problems.
- Also check CPU temperatures with your hardware vendor’s utility or BIOS hardware monitor.
- If temperatures are high, clean dust from vents and fans and make sure the cooler is mounted properly.
- If crashes continue, test RAM sticks one at a time or disconnect recently added hardware.
- Press Windows + R, type
